Statement from Bertha Lewis, Chief Organizer, ACORN Regarding Recent News Reports
September 12, 2009
The relentless attacks on ACORN’s members, its staff and the policies and positions we promote are unprecedented. An international entertainment conglomerate, disguising itself as a “news” agency (Fox), has expended millions, if not tens of millions of dollars, in their attempt to destroy the largest community organization of Black, Latino, poor and working families in the country. It is not coincidence that the most recent attacks have been launched just when health care reform is gaining traction. It is clear they’ve had these tapes for months.
We are their Willy Horton for 2009. We are the boogeyman for the right-wing and its echo chambers. If ACORN did not exist, the right-wing would have needed to create us in order to achieve their agenda, their missions, their ideal, retrograde America. This recent scam, which was attempted in San Diego, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Philadelphia to name a few places, had failed for months before the results we’ve all recently seen. I am appalled and angry; I cannot and I will not defend the actions of the workers depicted in the video, who have since been terminated. But it is clear that the videos are doctored, edited, and in no way the result of the fabricated story being portrayed by conservative activist “filmmaker” O’Keefe and his partner in crime. And, in fact, a crime it was - our lawyers believe a felony - and we will be taking legal action against Fox and their co-conspirators.
We will not be intimidated by this international conglomerate, which has made as its mission the destruction of our organization. ACORN members are committed to the empowerment of their communities - Black, Latino, poor, and working families at the deepest level. We are an organization committed to halting the foreclosure crisis and keeping people in their homes. We are an organization committed to ensuring quality, affordable health care for every American. We are an organization that will not be stopped in our commitment to our members and our communities which has included:
Helping hundreds of thousands of African-American and Latino voters register to vote and get to the polls in recent years;
Preparing, since 2004, approximately 150,000 free tax returns totaling $190 million in refunds and increased earned income tax credit participation;
Providing effective foreclosure prevention advocacy saving thousands of American families from losing their homes to foreclosure.
Pinging Rev. Wright.

Because I can’t be successful, I must tear down those who are.
Black skin means never having to say you’re sorry.

First the liberals scream racism because Beck and others air Van Jones own statements, and now they say it's racist to expose clear criminal conduct by ACORN workers, simply because they're black.
I think that even most Democrats see the glaring hypocrisy in this.
Teachers unions have contributed over $1.3 million to ACORN
But there is no guarantee that the $1,333,112 million in donations from the National Education Association (NEA) and Teachers AFL-CIO unions are actually being used for their stated purposes, according to present and former Association of Community Organizers for Reform Now (ACORN) officials.
Some of the larger donations include $100,000 from the NEA in 2008 and $200,000 in 2007 for political activities. The Teachers AFL-CIO Local Union 2 contributed $406,730 in 2008, $457,778 in 2007, and $346,300 in 2006 for representational activities.
To rich.

Bertha Lewis: We Are Willing To Go To Any Means Necessary
This is a campaign of refusal and resistance, refusal by distressed homeowners to cooperate with the foreclosure process and resistance to attempts to evict them from their homes. And in some cases it is a campaign of getting people back into their homes.
In Baltimore, ACORN member Donna Hanks re-took her home.
Donna used bolt cutters to break the lock to the door and re-enter the home.

Sadly, too many blacks have realized that to admit that Obama's ascension to the presidency proves that institutionalized racism in this country is a thing of the past, is to lose the crutch that has enabled them to tilt the playing field in their favor for so long.
Rather than look at his election as proof that they can achieve anything they want in America, they'd rather cling to the tried and true weapon of racist victimology to get ahead.
There is a breed of leftist thinking among some radical blacks that sees Obama's election as a validation of their sicko racist ideas, crazy as that sounds.
That's it! You explained it so well. Now it's so clear.
Dear ACORN, violator of so many laws I don’t have time nor space to list them:
As they say in the South, “That dog won’t hunt no more.” Calling racism used to work. Not any more. Not since last November. The racism bit is over. Dead. Find something else to harp on.
