I read, obviously at the time as a State Senator, that he was either at a speaking engagement or some sort of event and heard about it on the way there. Within days, he lamented that we must have learn to understand why the poor, downtrodden of the middle east would do this. Of course, he was wrong. The men were very educated and middle to upper class.

In the Illinois state Senate, I just read an article about it today on comcast.net. Can't find it now, but he didn't do anything special. Then a few days later he released a statement saying, I'm not kidding, that we have to get to the root causes of such acts. You know, poverty, resentment, ect. The kind of nuanced crap you'd expect your typical lefty to say. On the same day President Bush was on the bull horn with the firefighters the article said.
