After more than 15 years of slime, race-baiting, misogeny and shameless self-promotion, Michael Savage is off the air in his hometown market, San Francisco.
KNEW announced his departure on its Web site, with an unsigned note from a guy who looks like he's in management, or a character from the Sopranos.
"Here's your no-spin direct answer; we have decided to go in a different philosophical and ideological direction, featuring more contemporary content and more local information. The Savage Nation does not fit into that vision."
Let's read between the lines. It's not hard. Savage was expensive. Clear Channel, the owner, likes to save money. Savage, despite some popularity, has not helped the station climb out of 29th place in the local ratings. Bye bye.
Add to this the fact that Savage has been doing the last hour of his show as an infomercial format and misses a lot of shows, and you have the prima donna getting the boot.
Philosophical differences? Please. The station still has Glenn Beck, who is vying for Savage's sleaze leading position; Roger Hedgecock; and some guy named Schnit, who continues the Republican party line.
What really gives you the answer is what he has been replaced with: the syndicated John and Ken show from Los Angeles, which fits the station's pattern of getting more for their cheap channel bucks. The morning affair is a syndicated SF/Sacramento show that is virtually unlistenable.
I wish I could say that this will be the last the Bay sees of Savage, but as a betting man, I predict that he will be signed by Mickey Luckoff and Jack Swanson over at KSFO, the ones who brought him to us in the first place. Those guys announced their new liberal night host John Rothmann today, and I won't be surprised if that was to offset a Savage announcement. I'd be glad to be proven wrong.
They seem like nice guys, but their show can be kind of boring, and they are constantly harping on how great homosexual marriage is.
KNEW has never done very well in the ratings. They’ve gone through several formats over the years. I remember when they were country and carried A’s baseball. They don’t have the best signal, either.
Thanks for the info.
Did they play big band at one time?
You know what's really funny? I will be contributing the he maximum allowable amount to the campaign of Jerry Governor Moonbeam Brown, a liberal Democrat when he runs for Governor in 2010. Why? At the state governor level I am a single issue voter. Not only is Brown the most pro gun candidate running he, is the only pro gun candidate. This is being pointed out loudly and constantly on California RKBA forums and if the Pubs run Poizner, Whitman or Campbell they will lose Second Amendment voters. Come to think of it, I may support Brown regardless just to reward him for his Pro 2A statements and actions as AG.
Not that I remember. But I haven’t lived in California for a number of years.
It’s one thing that Brad Kava prefers something else. But he thinks anyone who he doesn’t agree with should be off the air.
True that
“Savage wasnt my favorite but I will take him over jon and Ken any day.”
Agreed. I tried giving John and Ken a good faith listening to yesterday and ended up changing stations and taking the station off my preset. They took an A- show and replaced it with a C- show.
Saving money at the expense of your customers doesn’t seem like a particularly good business strategy, but what do I know about the radio business anyway? Nothing.
All I know is that I won’t be listening to KNEW for the forseeable future.
Who will be?
Yes. But for some reason liberals also listen to Savage. I was first told about him by a liberal friend. I have caught others listening.
“liberals also listen to Savage.”
That’s VERY interesting.
