It looks like a Republican congressman's outburst on the House floor during President Barack Obama's address to Congress has momentarily eclipsed the speech itself, at least on Twitter.
"Joe Wilson," the South Carolina Republican congressman who shouted "you lie" at the president, is the top trending topic on Twitter right now. Trending topics track the most popular conversation subjects on the microblogging site.
"LIAR" and "R-SC" are also trending topics right now, meaning that three out of the ten topics are related to Wilson. "Obama" is the only non-Wilson topic trending about the speech right now.
Wilson made his comment after President Obama said that his health reform plan will insure illegal immigrants. Wilson's retort caused the presdient to pause momentarily during his speech.
Do you think Bush "lied?" Yes or no? Did he dream up the idea of WMDs as an excuse to invade Iraq? Or do you think he believed the intelligence from our own sources and those of all of our allies?
I was on my feet cheering like a wild woman when this happened. I was actually hoping for even more theatrics from the conservative Repubs.
Let no one forget that Obama threatened in the speech to “call you on any misstatements” he hears about HIS plan.” This “decorum” thing cuts both ways.
Bush certainly lied to somebody, if only himself. But the evidence for WMDs before the war was certainly sketchy, and it was his favorite pretext for the war. As for that compelling evidence we were supposed to find when we got into Iraq, it sure as hell wasn’t there, nor was there any evidence of Iraq involvement in 9/11. His father’s more cautious approach looks a heck of a lot better in retrospect than W’s original strategy and war aims in Iraq. Compared to the cost of that war, some uncivil debate beforehand seems fairly inexpensive, don’t you think? But Bush was at times as obnoxious as the Democrats always are, but the only real reason we should have avoided speaking our minds then was to avoid undermining the soldiers who were sent over there. But the facts about the war speak for themselves except where the debate was silenced, and that is what “respect for the Presidency” has come to mean. Dissent against government activism has been under attack since 2001. Everything is a crisis, and for every crisis, we’re supposed to listen to what our “leader” tells us and not question his motives or challenge the wisdom of his actions, as if this “leader” is someone with godlike clairvoyance and boundless love for every taxpayer instead of just another insecure social climber, a teleprompter, and a small sampling of DC establishment types. I’m sick and tired of it. The president is just a civil servant who is given entirely too much power.
Excellent the “he started it” playground nonsense
How about we act better then liberals, respect the office, and not have a dumbass Congress critter shoot off his mouth and take the focus off the awful speech made tonight.
Mr Wilson inflicted a body wound to our cause tonight because he couldn’t keep his fat mouth shut
Not when you’re president. The president is one of the few people in this country who can have you sent to jail if you don’t obey his rules of “decorum”. Can you say the same for yourself? I can’t.
The only people who “respect the office” is the majority of senators and congressmen...when they’re being addressed by the president...on camera.
First of all, if President Bush knew there were no WMD’s in Iraq, which is an absolutely ridiculous assertion, our Troops would have discovered the largest Cache of WMD’s you had ever seen the first week of the War.
Secondly, President Bush NEVER said that Iraq had anything to do with 9/11. That is a ridiculous LIE promoted by the Left to damage him and the War effort.
We can argue protocol all day long. No, I wouldn’t have had the chutzpah to do what he did. Still, the essence of this moment is this: FINALLY, a thoroughly insulated, isolated, constantly-vacationing, vacuous, mysterious man was directly confronted by a lone voice that reflects the two-word sentiment of millions upon millions of American citizens.
That's all I needed to know. Good night.
You don’t know s**t, but if you’re happy being ignorant, it’s not my fault.
I’m happy Joe Wilson called him a liar. It doesn’t even bother me that Wilson apologized shortly after. It’s out there. He said it. He said the truth and it makes me happy.
