Defying Critics, Obama Names Another Czar After Resignation of Environmental Adviser[Steel Union]

Obama chose a Labor Day union picnic on Monday as the backdrop to announce his selection of Ron Bloom, a member of his auto industry task force, as senior counselor for manufacturing policy. Bloom planned to travel to Cincinnati with Obama for an afternoon announcement at the AFL-CIO event.

"They have skirted around that process so there is no accountability for the czars," she said Monday. "Nobody has to go up and testify in front of Congress. They don't have to go through the process."

Bloom has already sidestepped congressional approval. He was senior adviser to Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner as part of the auto industry task force since February. Bloom, a Harvard Business School graduate, previously advised the United Steelworkers union and worked as an investment banker.

Bloom will work with the National Economic Council to lead policy development and planning for Obama's work to revitalize U.S. manufacturing, the White House said.

Perino said she doesn't object to the White House focusing on revitalizing the battered manufacturing industry.

"The National Economic Council, which is part of the White House with a seat right inside the West Wing, that's what their job is supposed to be," she said. "I'm not clear as to why they have to add all these additional layers."

Author and journalist Ronld Kessler, a national security expert, said Obama's lack of management experience is starting to catch up with him.

"You're seeing a White House in disarray," he said, citing the contentious debate over health care reform and the decision to close the Guantanamo Bay prison without finding a place to send the detainees. "He is not exactly a model CEO."

Who Is Ron Bloom?

http://blogs.wsj.com/economics/2009/02/16/who-is-ron-bloom/

a special assistant to the president of United Steelworkers Union and a former investment banker.

Mr. Bloom attended Harvard Business School, where he gravitated to populist business cases and was keenly interested in employee buyouts. After 10 years at investment banks, among them Lazard, he became special assistant to the USW president in 1996.

Both inside and outside the USW, Mr. Bloom is known as a financially savvy negotiator — with a tendency to spout profanities. In a 2007 article depicting Mr. Bloom’s role in the Wheeling-Pittsburgh Corp. takeover battle, The Wall Street Journal wrote some USW members thought Mr. Bloom is “too cozy with the moneymen.”

In that article, Mr. Bloom was quoted as saying that dealing with financial buyers of steel assets “is just business.” Indeed, he said, in contrast to traditional steel executives, who sometimes want unions “in their place,” talking to private-equity types is refreshing: “They don’t take cultural offense to anything. They just deal with power.”

The announcement follows the weekend resignation of Van Jones, the White House “green jobs czar” who had come under fire in recent weeks for past inflammatory statements, including one where he called Republicans “assholes,”

What’s the Commerce Department doing? Rhetorical question.

Obama calls it “Transparency”.

One would think that members of Congress would be steaming over the fact that the Constitution is being usurped by Czars doing what Congress was elected to be doing.

Yes, and the House of Representatives must be approving a budget to pay all the Czars, a Democrat Congress stamp of approval

That is what I also don’t understand. Them weasels on the hill should be screaming about losing their power, czar by czar, and yet they say nothing.

If there will not be a REAL honest PUBLIC review of his fitness to serve then America must do it for themselves.

He'll get along famously with Rahm.

What does a union leader with USW and formerly with SEIU know about manufacturing, except how to cripple it? What could go right with this appointment?

His job will be to bring public funds to soon-to-be-formerly private business manufacturing so they can hire union workers for the jobs created by “green” projects. Government will control the industry, tell them what to pay, who does what, etc..

Just like Chavez.

Bloom attended Haborim (Labor Zionist Youth) camps when a youth. A United States citizen he is from a strong left-wing Zionist Labor (Zionist Socialist) background, and that movement was born from the same crucible that evolved into the Bolshevik movement in Russia. Despite making his bones on Wall Street, he has maintained a lifelong involvement with the labor movement in the United States. One cannot visualize that he would be interested in developing American industry — unless and until it was of direct benefit to labor. It is highly unlikely that even the Democrat-dominated Senate would approve his nomination to the position appointed by Obama.
