Gordon Brown ‘on drugs to control depression’

Is Gordon Brown still fit for office? A blog posted today by the journalist John Ward on his website notbornyesterday.org suggests that the PM may be in worse health than the public realise. He claims there are signs the PM is taking powerful drugs to control both depression and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD).

Ward bases his hypothesis on a tip-off from a senior civil servant that Brown has recently been given a "long list of forbidden foods". The civil servant, who works regularly with the PM, told Ward that Brown had been banned from eating and drinking several specific things "because of the drugs he's on".

Top of the list of foods that Brown can no longer touch, the source told Ward, were cheese, Chianti and over-ripe avocados - which immediately rang alarm bells for Ward. "Every doctor in Britain would recognise these contra-indications instantly: for they are the great verbotens for people taking MAOI drugs."

So someone suffering from depression or OCD is unfit to hold office? Disagree.

Are we still isolating and discounting people who suffer from mental illness? For shame!

Whether or not that's true (debatable), it certainly hasn't all happened in the last two years, which is all that Brown's had in charge.

O.K.

He has had some help.

But he certainly has done nothing to reverse or even stop it.

Islamopandering has become a way of life in western Europe AND America.

We are ruled by loony tunes
Michael Savage often remarks that many of our Senators and Representatives are on meds that warp their thinking and outright psych-meds like Gordon Brown is allegedly taking

Senators Voinovich and Specter impress me as having their minds in altered states. Dittos for Robert Byrd

When you read the article, the person making the accusation that Brown is taking medication for depression, etc. is basing it on a list of foods that Brown needs to avoid. That seems a little weak to me...

Besides, I do not think that depression should keep someone from being PM. It didn’t keep Churchill from being a great one.

We have come a long way in my lifetime in recognizing that mental diseases have a chemical component. The drugs that have been developed to bring those chemical imbalances back to a normal range have helped millions of people.

I agree that taking medication for certain types of mental illness is not a contraindication for serving in high office. It would worry me to have someone diagnosed with OCD in such an office though. It can have truly bizarre effects on behavior, decision-making, and prioritization, and is difficult to fully control with medication.
