Interview of my friend, a 9/11 Survivor 1. Where were you on 9-11?
Outside, a few blocks east of the WTC. Being on the east side actually prevented me from seeing the very worst of that day, although what I did see what hideous enough. 2. What is your most vivid memory of that day? There are so many, it's hard to say. The disbelief and uncertainty right after the North Tower was hit, before we even knew that it was a plane. It just seemed too "furious" and hot to be a regular fire, so I felt that it was something extraordinary, but I didn't know what. I remember calling my father to let him know that there was a big explosion at the WTC, but that I was OK -- and then him hearing on the radio that it was an airplane. While we were talking, there were secondary explosions inside the North Tower and then little bits and slivers of glass fell on us. I also vividly remember watching people falling/jumping and just refusing to believe that it was happening. Another strong memory is of running for my life when I was told that the South Tower was coming down (not realizing that it had collapsed into itself, I assumed that it either toppled or exploded and took out everything for blocks in every direction). The awful noise, the abject horror on so many faces and then trying to outrun that debris cloud. I remember wondering if I was about to die. And when I heard that awful, familiar rumbling again, I stopped to watch the North Tower just pancake downward, realizing that thousands of people were inside -- including people I knew. Sometime shortly after that, as I was walking uptown along South Street/East River Drive, I somehow got to talking with a shell-shocked guy who worked on the 9th floor of the North Tower and he wound up telling me every gory detail of what he saw on the way out. He also kept trying to walk back there, because he wanted to take the ferry back to New Jersey, so I had to keep pulling him back by his arm. 3. How did your life change as a result of what you saw or experienced? PTSD. I didn't sleep for more than a year afterward (never more than a few hours a night). I feel as if I've lost a certain innocence and now realize that my neighborhood could really be blown up again, and maybe me with it next time. When I see footage on TV of terrorist attacks, I feel as if I know what it's like there -- the confusion, the horror, the mental disconnect as you don't want to believe that it's really happening, the fear, the smells, etc. I guess it feels like my life is divided into pre-9/11 and post-9/11, in terms of experiences, perspectives, etc. 4. When someone tells you that you need to "move on" how does that make you feel? Angry! Very few have said that to me, but the few who have been stupid and insensitive enough have felt my wrath. 5. Do you believe that most of America remembers? Why or why not? Hard to say. I think it goes along political lines -- those who remember are those who tend to support the war against islamofascism and understand why we're doing it, and there are those who are stuck in the Clintonian mindset of "tit for tat," in that we wait until the terrorists hit us, and *then* we strike back...proportionately, of course (like bombing empty buildings in the middle of the night, to "make a statement")...and then call it even. 6. Is there anything that you, as someone who experienced the horrors of that day first hand, would like to say to the rest of us? Thank you to everyone who remembers and has prayed for us. Please keep the survivors of the 9/11 attacks in your prayers. Thank you to the troops who have put themselves in harms way to ensure that this does not happen again on American soil. The men and women of the US Armed Forces are the best in the world, bar none. God bless you all! |

Anytime you are on early, before we post the daily list, and you'd like to smack some videos, please feel free to click the link below and smack away! http://attacked911.tripod.com After some observations this past week, we have decided to put a new link up for the Zero Dark Thirty list each night, so your bookmarked link won't be current anymore. I was due at work at 8am for the regular Tuesday sales meeting, working for the Freeport Ink, the local weekly paper I later wrote for. I got in a little early to plan out my sales calls so I could head out the second the meeting was over. Roxanne, a co-worker, came in and said she’d just heard on her car radio that the World Trade Center had been hit by a plane. My first thought was of the B-25 that hit the Empire State Building during WWII. She started trying to tune in the news on the radio, but wasn’t having much luck. AM reception was notoriously bad in our office, and I never thought to tell her to try NPR.
Within a few minutes the rest of the sales staff was there, and by now I had told Roxanne I’d call my wife, Carol, who was usually watching Fox at this time of day, and ask her what the latest info was. While I was on the phone with her, she screamed in my ear. She had just seen the second plane hit. After a moment I said, “I love you and I’ll be right back,” put the receiver down and turned to a room full of sales colleagues who were staring at me, having seen my reaction. “Another plane hit the Trade Center,” I said. “We are at war.”
A while later my son (known on FR as Silverback Jr.), 6 at the time, came down from playing in his bedroom and saw the second impact when it was rebroadcast from tape on Fox. He immediately ran to the phone and dialed 911. My wife tried to hang up before the call went out, but it was too late, the dispatcher called back, and when my wife explained, she said “Oh, bless his heart!”
Later that day, my daughter asked me who Barbara was. I hadn’t heard the news about Barbara Olson yet, so I had no idea what she was talking about. It turns out that after hearing of Barbara’s death, my poor wife, who had seen her sparring with the Left so many times, sat for several minutes, weeping and repeating that name over and over.
As for me, I was in the office most of the day...no one was in a mood to do a lot of business. My boss and I managed to find WBBM out of Chicago and listened all day. The first report of Flight 93 on WBBM was that a plane had impacted “in or near Pittsburgh.” No offense to Pittsburgh, but when I heard that, I thought “Pittsburgh? Why the heck would they attack Pittsburgh?” It felt like there were going to be planes falling out of the sky all over the country. Meanwhile, for hours after the Pentagon attack, our editor had no idea where a relative working in DC was (she worked for a defense contractor, IIRC), but they came through it OK.
For some reason, when they said the towers had fallen, I failed to grasp that they had collapsed completely, and pictured them each destroyed down to the point of impact, but still standing. I must have been stunned on some level, because it seems so silly to write that today.
That evening I got home and saw the video, and grasped what had happened. I also saw Giuliani’s famous “more than we can bear” press conference and fully expected, as he did, tens of thousands of casualties. I didn’t cry though...not until the President came on. About halfway through the speech I began weeping like a baby.
On the 14th, most of the staff was in the office putting the paper to bed when the President spoke at the National Day of Prayer and Remembrance. NPR was carrying live coverage, and I turned up the radio in the editorial office. The choral performance of The Battle Hymn of the Republic carried from editorial into sales and down the hallway some. And then the President came to the podium...”We are here in the middle hour of our grief...”
We all stood in silence and listened to him give what I still think is the best speech of his presidency, maybe the best one any politician has delivered since Reagan’s Challenger and “Tear Down this Wall” speeches. When he had finished, Roxanne said “Thank you,” a few others nodded or muttered the same, and we all went back to work. There was nothing else to say.
I don’t know how people forget. I can’t. I won’t. Not ever.
Thank you Mr. S. My most vivid personal memories are of the horrified people who ran by the cameras totally covered in ash. Or the hoards of people who were walking across the bridges out of the city. Or of my mother in law saying she thought my brother in law was in NYC that day (it turned out later that he wasn’t, but we didn’t know for a while.) Of of a friend who was traveling in Boston and due to fly home that day. Or the people who chose to jump from the WTC and die on their own terms rather than permit cowards to decide how they would die. I will never those images and feelings out of my mind — nor do I want to.

Mornin' Fellow Patriots!
It's the day after... and what are you going to do? Me, the more I see of the terrorist support provided by Youtube, the angrier I get. What a convenient excuse YouTube has, not being able to speak arabic. "Well, we don't speak arabic, so how are we going to tell if this is hate speech or not?" Well, beyond the arabic hurdle, any image that shows an alqada flag or the as-sahab logo should imply hate speech by the vary nature of that terrorist organization.
I read on the Jawa Report yesterday that YouTube claims to have cleaned up the terrorist mess they have on their hands. Really? REALLY?!?!?!? They should come talk to us. Personally, after the anemic response we have gotten from YouTube over the summer, I think the terrorist support provided by YouTube has gotten worse and the e-haidi's have gotten bolder. Is this part of our new outreach to the "religion of peace"?
Hey, YouTube. You still have a terrorist problem. You can keep boobs off YouTube, why can't you keep alqada off???? WTF?
