A Gwinnett County man is in custody Wednesday accused of slapping a strangers crying toddler in a Stone Mountain Wal-Mart.
Witnesses say that Roger Stephens, 61, warned the mother of the child that he would shut up the crying child if she couldnt, WSB-TV is reporting. Stephens is accused of slapping the 2-year-old multiple times in the face and then walking away.
A bystander held Stephens until store security came to assist, according to the story.

And folks, I would bet that this is not the first time this guy has come to police attention (domestic problems? assault? DWI?)...
I totally agree. You remember the scene from “Kindergarten Cop” where Arnold confronts the abusive father? After Arnold decks the scum he says, “You hit him, I hit you.”
Heck, I have an 8 year old who has caused us to stop taking her shopping because she still wants to touch everything, and when we try to stop her she causes a scene. Well, no shopping for her.
If the old codger didn’t want to deal with kids, He should have been shopping at Sax and not walmart. I hope they throw the book at this guy.
Everyone has been agrivated by someone elses kid, hell everyone has been aggrivated by their own kids crying. However you don’t just go slapping someone elses kid when their parent is around, no matter how much you think they deserve it.
This guy is the jacka$$ who always stole your ball as a kid if they landed in his yard.
Depends on the Walmart you go to. There is one near here that's bad. Kids are out of control, over-sized moms cruise the bakery section and not a father within 5 miles.
With the grandkids, I just look at them and say "Hey!" and they stop. Must be cause they've seen Dad run. :-)
And if you're going to slap anyone, slap the parent for not controlling their kid. But of course this guy wouldn't have the 'nads to do it.
Exactly, a man that will walk up and slap someone else’s kid, is a dangerous man with major temper and control issues.
Some people won’t take it that way.
Rightwingers want to beat other people’s kids, on Huffington Post tomorrow.
because, you know, slapping a two-year-old always helps calm them down.
But why slap the parent if the child is crying because they are hungry or tired? Life doesn’t always follow a schedule.
because, you know, slapping a two-year-old always helps calm them down.
I suppose for Huffington’s sake, I should post a sarcasm tag.
I agree. Don't people realize this is a TWO year old child...a little girl who was slapped by a strange grown man. They don't simply stop crying because someone wants them too. This man should have had the tar slapped out of him before security got there. He had no business disciplining someone else's child. Even if it was his child, he should never hit a two year old in the face. Where are the REAL men in the world these days...far too feminized an America we live in when grown poor excuse's of men can slap someone else's children and some other real man doesn't beat the tar out of him immediately. Slapping tiny children in the face and then getting accolades for it...disgusting.
LOL!!
When we are shopping and there's a crying child, Hubby always says "Somebody's unhappy".
Thing is, that man had the option of leaving, the poor mother was stuck.
I certainly hope this guy never had any kids of his own. If he could do this to a stranger’s kid in public, think what he would do to his own. And thank goodness for the bystander who detained him.
well said....I have sure never slapped a two year old in the face
I shudder to think what my wife would have done to that guy if it was one of our kids.... he’d be taking a ride in an ambulance, without a doubt.
lol...we alwasy say “somebody ain’t happy”
you can tell by the cry if it is pain, tired, fear or temper
I’ve found that some encouraging words to a parent obviously stuck in that situation helps. Somebody did that for me when I was a brand-new parent and it gave me the strength to get through it without doing something stupid.
Now that girl, who screamed for an hour outside of the laundromat when she was about a year old, is perfectly behaved.
Yup.
