Why everybody seems so inclined to ignore what he says or continues to entertain hopes that he doesn't mean what he says, is a mystery to me.

What mystery? It's just too scary to take him at his word and, in doing so, too many would have to admit that they were fools in voting for him.

I just think it’s amazing that so many people of my own acquaintance who pat themselves on the back for being so virtuous for having voted for an “african-american” (which he is not, as VDH points out in the OP) as some testament to their belief in racial equality, are the first ones to patronise him so blatantly. They don’t take him at his word, as they would any other adult politican of any other race. They seem to regard him as some kind of brain-damaged child who’s just talking through his hat. It’s THEY who do not respect him as an equal, it seems to me.

Very true, and on the occasions where I have informed people- from the checkout person in Whole Foods to 20-something kids of friends and their friends- the looks on their faces when I tell them some horrifying truths about this administration, who they and what they've done- is one of fear and anxiety.

Their stunned disbelief when I explained the Honduras situation to them- what happened there and what obozo has said about it, and now the withholding of aid- causes consternation in their faces. The proof is in the pudding.
