UPDATED: Glenn Beck goes after Color of Change co-founder Van Jones

August 24, 2009

Glenn Beck used his popular Fox News show this afternoon to attack the background of Van Jones, a White House environmental advisor who co-founded an African American political advocacy group that organized an advertising boycott of his program.

During his 2 p.m. PDT show, Beck did not address the boycott spearheaded by Color of Change to protest the talk show host’s remark last month that he believes President Obama is “a racist.”

Instead, he spent a large share of his program suggesting that Jones, who co-founded Color of Change in 2005, is a radical. Jones now serves as a special advisor for Green Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation at the White House Council on Environmental Quality.

During a six-minute biographical profile, set to ominous music, Beck said Jones was twice arrested for political protests and has described himself as a "rowdy black nationalist." The talk show host cast the piece as part of a broader examination of Obama's "czars," special advisers to the president who "don't answer to anybody."

"Why is it that such a committed revolutionary has made it so high into the Obama administration as one of his chief advisers?" Beck asked.

Christine Glunz, a spokeswoman for the White House Council on Environmental Quality, noted that Jones has been lauded as an environmental hero and said his entire focus is on “building clean energy incentives which create 21st-century jobs.”

“Glenn Beck is trying to change the subject,” said James Rucker, executive director of Color of Change, who noted that Jones has not been active with the group in almost two years. “The issue is his baseless fear mongering.”

Beck has gone after Jones in the past.

EXCERPTED:

On July 28, he called the activist a "self-professed communist" and questioned the role he was playing in the administration.

His latest assault on Jones came as Color of Change announced that it has secured commitments from 36 companies who have pledged not to advertise on Beck’s popular program, including Wal-Mart and Sprint.

However, some of the companies never had a presence on "Glenn Beck." Representatives of Procter & Gamble and AT&T – listed by Color of Change as companies that had signed onto the boycott – told The Times that their companies did not run spots on Beck’s program to begin with.

What the hell would this guy know about science and the environment? He’s a moronic political advocacy group jerk. How in the hell can anyone be expected to take this moron seriously? “Environmental Advisor. So simple, a caveman can do it.”

Glen really needs to be applauded for what he has been doing lately. He’s solving the mystery of who’s writing all these monstrous thousand-page bills that appear overnight seemingly out of nowhere. Obviously not congress - they have no clue what’s in them. So who’s behind them? They are the ones running the government not our representatives.

Kudos to Glen for doing all the spade work. Let’s shine some light on these cockroaches and watch them scatter - like Hannety did with Wright and Ayers.

Go Beck! Kick his butt!

Background:

Van Jones

"..Speaking to the East Bay Express, Jones explained that as a young person he became further politicized in the wake of the Rodney King verdict. Jones was still a law student at Yale Law School at the time. While volunteering as a legal monitor during a peaceful protest in San Francisco following the Rodney King trial, Jones was arrested along with other legal monitors and some protesters. He and the other detainees were released after being illegally arrested; the charges were later dropped and Jones was financially compensated by the City of San Francisco's Attorneys Office for the unlawful arrest.[15] In jail, however, Van Jones said,

"I met all these young radical people of color -- I mean really radical, communists and anarchists. And it was, like, 'This is what I need to be a part of.' I spent the next ten years of my life working with a lot of those people I met in jail, trying to be a revolutionary. I was a rowdy nationalist on April 28th, and then the verdicts came down on April 29th. By August, I was a communist."[16]

In 1994 the group of activists Van Jones was involved with Standing Together to Organize a Revolutionary Movement (STORM), a collective which "dreamed of a multiracial socialist utopia".[16].."

This guy is a real screwhead.***********

Neither Beck nor Fox News will want for advertisers. Can’t say that for the other cable channels with 1/3 their audience or less. And Jones IS a professed Communist. Why won’t “respected” media outlets (like the L.A.Times) asking our president why he has a Communist on his staff?

What a BS cover story. The real reason Color of Change wants Glenn off the air is his expose of the criminal enterprise known as ACORN.

Love Glenn but had to send him this email DURING the Jones segment. If you noticed the same thing, shoot him a message at glennbeck@foxnews.com.

DEAR GLENN,

THE VAN JONES SEGMENT WAS ALMOST UNWATCHABLE DUE TO THE FAR TOO LOUD MUSIC TRACK. I PRODUCE SOME OF THOSE THINGS MYSELF AND THERE’S NO REASON FOR THE MUSIC TRACK TO BE THAT UP FRONT.

YOU HAVE TOO IMPORTANT A MESSAGE FOR IT TO HE OVERSHADOWED BY THAT SORT OF DISTRACTION.

PLEASE EITHER HAVE ANOTHER PRODUCER PUT THOSE TOGETHER OR HIRE A NEW ONE.
Regards and welcome back to Bedlam,

Dick Bachert

noted that Jones has been lauded as an environmental hero

An environmentalist is a new package word for a communist that's easier to sell to the unknown American people than the word communist!

Like progressive is package for liberal!!

They are all the same, environmentalist, progressive, socialist, communist code words. It is time for the American people to wake up and accept it for what it real IS!!!

I think there is some real big trouble coming down the pike.

1. Obama has the banks, financial institutions, car companies, “green manufacturers” (GE), and is attempting to get the healthcare industry including doctors, hospitals, nurses, and insurance companies.

2. Obama is creating a civillian military force as powerful and as well funded as the regular army.

3. The CIA is going to be investigated and my guess, made impotent in order to prevent them from carrying out their tasks.

4. Interrogations are going to be conducted by a “Task Force” that answers only to the President and not to the military, FBI or CIA.

5. Just as healthcare is about to blow up in their face, I think something is going to happen.

All of this stuff has happened at a record pace, so fast we barely know what has hit us. Now that we have begun to see the detrimental change that is occuring, it seems as though we may be able to stop a healthcare takeover.

Rahm Emmanuel has stated “never let a crisis go to waste.”

With what I have mentioned above does it seem likely that a major crisis is on its way, so big, and so disastrous, it will allow the government to sieze control over anything it wants including individuals?

Is it possible that they are going to allow a major attack to succeed on American soil and no one will be able to stop it because the people who be able to stop will be out of the loop?

Am I out of line on this?

PROFILE: VAN JONES

Born in 1968 in rural West Tennessee, Van Jones earned a B.A. degree from the University of Tennessee at Martin and then attended Yale Law School. During his years at Yale, Jones served as an intern with the San Francisco-based Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights (LCCR), which views the United States as an irredeemably racist nation and "champions the legal rights of people of color, poor people, immigrants and refugees, with a special commitment to African-Americans."

Jones says that he first became politically radicalized in the aftermath of the deadly April 1992 Los Angeles riots which erupted shortly after four L.A. police officers who had beaten the infamous Rodney King were exonerated in court. "I was a rowdy nationalist on April 28th," says Jones, who is black, "and then the verdicts came down on April 29th. By August, I was a communist."

Jones was arrested during the L.A. riots and spent a short time in jail. "I met all these young radical people of color," he recalls, "I mean really radical: communists and anarchists. And it was, like, 'This is what I need to be a part of.' I spent the next ten years of my life working with a lot of those people I met in jail, trying to be a revolutionary."

After earning his Juris Doctorate from Yale in 1993, Jones relocated to San Francisco, where he helped establish Bay Area PoliceWatch, a hotline and lawyer-referral service that began as a project of LCCR. In 1996 he founded the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights, which, claiming that the American criminal-justice system is infested with racism, seeks to promote alternatives to incarceration. According to the Baker Center:

"Decades of disinvestment in our cities have led to despair and hopelessness. For poor communities and communities of color it's even worse, as excessive, racist policing and over-incarceration have left people even further behind."

By the late 1990s, Jones was a committed Marxist-Leninist-Maoist who viewed police officers as the arch-enemies of black people, and who loathed capitalism for allegedly exploiting nonwhite minorities worldwide. He became a leading member of Standing Together to Organize a Revolutionary Movement (STORM), a now-defunct Bay Area Marxist-Maoist collective that was staffed by members of various local nonprofits, a number of whom had ties to the Ella Baker Center.

In the early 2000s, Jones and STORM were active in the anti-Iraq War demonstrations organized by International ANSWER, a front group for the Marxist-Leninist Workers World Party. STORM also had ties to the South African Communist Party and it revered Amilcar Cabral, the late Marxist revolutionary leader (of Guinea-Bissau and the Cape Verde Islands) who lauded Lenin as "the greatest champion of the national liberation of the peoples." (In 2006 Van Jones would name his own newborn son "Cabral" -- in Amilcar Cabral's honor.)

During his tenure with STORM, Jones collaborated on numerous projects (including antiwar demonstrations) with local activist Elizabeth "Betita" Martinez, who served as a "mentor" for members of the Ella Baker Center. Martinez was a longtime Maoist who went on to join the Committees of Correspondence for Democracy and Socialism (CCDS), a Communist Party USA splinter group, in the early 1990s. To this day, Martinez continues to sit on the CCDS advisory board alongside such luminaries as Angela DavisTimuel Black (who served on Barack Obama's 2004 Senate campaign committee), and musician Pete Seeger. Martinez is also a board member of the Movement for a Democratic Society, the parent organization of Progressives for Obama. Martinez and Van Jones together attended a "Challenging White Supremacy" workshop which advanced the theme that "all too often, the unconscious racism of white activists stands in the way of any effective, worthwhile collaboration" with blacks.

In 2005 Jones and the Ella Baker Center produced the "Social Equity Track" for the United Nations' World Environment Day celebration, a project that eventually would evolve into the Baker Center's Green-Collar Jobs Campaign -- "a job-training and employment pipeline providing 'green pathways out of poverty' for low-income adults in Oakland."

Soon after attending the Clinton Global Initiative in September 2007, Jones launched "Green For All," a non-governmental organization "dedicated to building an inclusive green economy strong enough to lift people out of poverty … advocating for local, state and federal commitment to job creation, job training, and entrepreneurial opportunities in the emerging green economy - especially for people from disadvantaged communities."

In 2008 Jones published his first book, The Green Collar Economy, which focused on environmental and economic issues. The book received favorable reviews from such notables as Al GoreNancy PelosiLaurie DavidWinona LaDuke, environmentalist Paul Hawken, and NAACP President/CEO Ben Jealous.

Jones has served as a board member of numerous environmental and nonprofit organizations, including the Rainforest Action NetworkFree Press; Bioneers (which accepts the United Nations Millennium Ecosystem Report's warning that "[h]uman activity is putting such strain on the natural functions of Earth that the ability of the planet's ecosystems to sustain future generations can no longer be taken for granted"); the National Apollo Alliance (which seeks "to catalyze a clean energy revolution that will put millions of Americans to work in a new generation of high-quality, green-collar jobs"); the Social Venture Network (which aims "to build a just economy and sustainable planet"); and Julia Butterfly Hill's "Circle of Life" environmental foundation.

Jones was also a Senior Fellow with the Center for American Progress and a Fellow at the Institute of Noetic Sciences.

In March 2009, President Barack Obama named Jones to be his so-called "Green Jobs Czar." Jones' formal title is "Special Advisor for Green Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation" for the White House Council on Environmental Quality.

In a July 2009 interview with Newsweek magazine, Jones said he could not explain exactly what a "green job" is:

"Well, we still don't have a unified definition, and that's not unusual in a democracy. It takes a while for all the states and the federal government to come to some agreement. But the Department of Labor is working on it very diligently. Fundamentally, it's getting there, but we haven't crossed the finish line yet."
