Not long ago, the first lady planted the first seeds for the White House's own organic garden. Now the Obamas want to expand the idea to set up a farmers market just outside the White House.
One aim of the market will be to help local farmers deliver fresh produce to D.C. school cafeterias, to encourage kids to make healthier choices in their diet. The president announced the plan at an interactive health care strategy meeting yesterday:
"When it comes to food, one of the things that we are doing is working with school districts...Let's figure out how can we get some fresh fruits and vegetables in the mix. Because sometimes you go into schools and, you know what the menu is, you know? It's French fries, tater tots, hot dogs, pizza and -- let's face it, that's what kids want to eat anyway. (Laughter.) So it's not just the schools' fault.
A.)That's what kids may want to eat. B.) it turns out that that food's a lot cheaper, because of the distributions that we've set up. And so what we've got to do is to change how we think about, for example, getting local farmers connected to school districts, because that would benefit the farmers, delivering fresh produce, but right now they just don't have the distribution mechanisms set up.
One of the things that we're trying to do now is to figure out, can we get a little farmers market outside of the White House? It suddenly gives D.C. more access to good, fresh food, but it also is this enormous potential revenue-maker for local farmers in the area."
There's no word yet on whether any of the produce from the White House's own organic garden will be part of the bounty, but the market should provide a shining symbol for the organic and local food movement.
“”But, boy dont they just love to talk?””
He sounds like a school kid when he talks. It truly is pathetic. There ought to be a law against the stupid ideas he comes up with.
Just get to heck out of our way.
we go ‘em beat by a mile in my home town. For years, our middle school kids run a produce business - from growing in outside gardens to a greenhouse.
They follow through the whole process from planting to harvesting, to marketing/selling, to seed gathering, packaging and sell those to.
They learn, in the process, how to run a small business.
Heck of lot better than just the school be given produce from the outside...
Ah, but that will never do. We don't want kids learning how to be self-sufficient, how to run a small business, etc...
Hard to keep folk like that dependent on the gov’t, bowls in hand: “Please, Mac Daddy, can I have some more?”
Doesn’t he have other things to do, such as governing, and heading up our armed forces? I’m just sayin’....
You betcha! In fact, that WAS on my things-to-do list today, but I never did leave the house, LOL!
I will support him. I promise. :)
Won’t Obummer’s own “food safety” law make his “farmers market” a federal violation?
(Note, I always feel violated by the feds every April; violating the public is what the feds do best.)
The Obama’s Potemkin garden....Who knows how much produce they are actually eating from it since the soil has a high lead content due to sewage sludge used as fertilizer during the Clinton years. The sewage sludge was probably used to curry favor with eco-wackos because using this sludge is considered recycling. Your turds get recycled
I totally disagree with you. Healthy food is actually cheaper than unhealthy food --- IF, and that's a big if, one knows how to cook, or is willing to do so.
Therein lies the problem.
People getting food stamps generally have more "money" available for food than the average person. What is unfortunate is that far too many of those people never learned how to food shop or to cook and their kids tend to be the unhealthiest, or at least their diet is.
I have long said that people receiving food stamps should be required to take at least a rudimentary cooking class nd a basic one on budgeting.
But what do I know? I'm only someone who shops sales, cooks from scratch, and unfortunately is currently receiving foodstamps.
We can do better than a 3rd world IQ.
Actually, that’s changed a little. We now have until AUGUST each year to feel violated because most of us have to work through August to meet our various tax obligations.
(Now, don’t go out behind the barn and shoot yourself or anything, LOL!)
The more money the parents have, the easier it will be to make those healthy food choices!

And YET ANOTHER vote for the $50.00 per hour minimum wage.

The White House has become “toxic green” or is that “soylent green”? Its a toss up.
Wasn’t ‘chelle servin’ up some mercury laced lettuce to the chilens?
Obama arugula -- selling for billions on E-Bay and eradicating the deficit!
Yes we can!
Not that I don't think that The One's whole idea isn't an obamination = but you CAN grow vegetables year 'round.
GOOGLE or AMAZON for Eliot Coleman - he's quite famous for growing fresh vegetable year 'round, in northern Maine.
I took a trip across the way to his "Four Seasons Farm" last week to get veggies to replace the ones that got drowned out twice in my garden - terrible rains every freaking day for 3 months.
In the meantime, we need to alert Rush, Beck, Hannity et al about missy michelle's White House lawn 'organic garden' - the one with veggies full of lead from the former spreading of sludge. That fact should have easily available to her - but these elites don't bother doing research on anything. After all, they're born already knowing it all, doncha know.
It's another - and hilarious - example of The One's goof ups...and people pay more attention to something that is so laughable - and equate it quickly to other things they propose...this is too good to let go to waste.

Actually, everything these two America hating elitists do is polluted with sludge...
But, but I thought they found lead in the garden?????
“The more money the parents have, the easier it will be to make those healthy food choices!”
I’ll pile-on, too, LOL!
I totally understand your POV; there are poor people who make healthy choices, and wealthy people who let their kids eat crap all day long. And there are people who don’t know chit from Shine-ola too, LOL! And we WOULD be further ahead if Government would get out of our way!
A number of years back, I fed two adult men, one adult woman (me), and THREE teen boys for $150.00 a month without missing a beat.
It takes planning and cooking at home and packing lunches, and growing your own food and shopping sales and eating day-old bread, but it IS do-able on nearly any income level.
I totally adore my MIL. She is the QUEEN of frugal (and worth a few million at this point in her life) and she fed and clothed twelve kids on a farmer’s income.
But, again, you’re right. Inner-city folk are helpless in many ways; and I believe that’s by design thanks to our wonderful, generous, creating dependents-for-life Government. Grrrrrr!
Having a garage sale would be classy and sooooo compassionate.
