How much profit do they make? According to a recent study by PricewaterhouseCooper, just 3 cents on the dollar. This is pretty small compared to those in other industries.
The profits would be less if there were more competition. That is, if the tax code didnt favor employer-provided insurance, which makes it difficult for consumers to change providers and encourages people to buy more insurance than they otherwise would. It also doesnt help that mandated benefits regulations force people to pay for coverage they may not want, like infertility treatment, treatment for alcohol abuse, etc.
Just 3 cents on the dollar? That’s an awful lot of shuffling for pretty much nothing. They must make it up in volume, or else why lobby so hard....
Out of the 14 cents for Drugs - I wonder how much of that is profits.
About 60 percent of community hospitals are nonprofit, all community health centers are nonprofit, almost 30 percent of nursing homes are nonprofit, and about 17 percent of home health care agencies are estimated to be nonprofit.
Nonprofit health plans are estimated to serve over 40 percent or more of all private health insurance enrollees.
I work for a heart insurer and will vouch for this. Most people believe we’re making tons of money but we spend about 87 cents of every dollar on health costs. Much of that goes to fix up people who haven’t taken care of their bodies- obesity, smoking, alcohol, drugs, poorly treated hypertension, neglected health screenings.
And what percentage of the health care dollar go to malpractice insurance/lawyers?
They aren't lobbying so hard. They are one of the most over regulated industries in existence. The only people "lobbying hard" are the Unions FOR Obama.
That is a great article that you linked.
I found it interesting that the author broke down how different countries record their infant mortality stats.
The ‘left’ is constantly saying that ours is higher, it’s all in the record keeping!
Very interesting chart. Inpatient/Outpatient costs basically means hospital costs, I guess, but I wonder if it also includes some of the other categories.
If someone were inclined, you could destroy liberals with that study. About half of the yearly rise in insurance costs are due to inflation, which is a direct result of the Federal government printing paper currency, instead of sticking to the gold standard.
If I were in congress I would add a provision that this be OFFICIALLY named OBAMACARE in o’s “honor”. This needs to be tied to his legacy so that cursing his name will be on the lips of those who stand in lines, share wards, wait for treatment, go without quality care, etc. The type of care received and his name need to be one in the same. How could anyone object? After all, they believe it will be so wonderful, so what better than to have his name on it?
The Gopers are yelling that there is no check on citizenship in the new universal health crap. That is typical GOP half steppin.
What they need to do is not demand that eligibility be checked but that IF YOUR NOT ELIGIBILE, YOU GET DEPORTED!
The almighty D WORD.
Illegals don’t care if you check their eligibility if you don’t do anything about it.
