When they were new and seemed invincible they had a window in which they might have gotten away with it. But if they try that garbage now it will rightly be seen as silencing opposition when it is clear the administration is the one failing and in the wrong.
The political window of opportunity on this one is closed firmly and a revolt would erupt if they tried to pry it open right now.
