A town hall gathering on crime and corruption hosted by U.S. Rep. Steve Scalise in Elmwood addressed a range of law-and-order issues Wednesday night, but the meeting eventually veered into a discussion of health care reform.

The gathering attracted a standing-room-only crowd that packed the second-floor council chamber of the Joseph S. Yenni Building. Scalise said he organized the event before the town hall meetings on President Barack Obama's health care overhaul began.

For his town hall meeting, Scalise pulled together a panel featuring Jefferson Parish Sheriff Newell Normand, Jefferson Parish District Attorney Paul Connick, Orleans Parish District Attorney Leon Cannizzaro and U. S. Attorney Jim Letten.

When Scalise opened the floor with the caveat that health care questions would be taken later, about 20 people formed a queue to address crime. The questions, sometimes in the form of free-flowing rants, included concerns about prosecutor misconduct, immigration, gun control and corruption in Washington.
