I recently did a radio interview with BJ Janice Peak-Graham about my book, Black Feminist Politics from Kennedy to Clinton. She said that as she was reading the book, she was struck with the realization that I was, in fact, writing about her life. She had been a Clinton appointee, and it had never occurred to her that her experience was part of the political history of that time period.
Watching the coverage of the Obama family in the White House, one cant help but feel a certain media giddiness to be able to report on all these new firsts. But to say that this family is the first Black family of an American president is simply wrong.
Before Michelle Obama there was Sally Hemings, who bore the sons and daughters of Thomas Jefferson. Id like to share an excerpt from my second book edited with Bruce D Baum, Racially Writing the Republic.

Well said, thanks!
Nippless Star and Sickle, eh?
Jeez, it started out with one kid who was of Jefferson family lineage to now “sons and daughters”. Goebbels would be impressed.
Even the ‘one kid’ is highly doubtful
LOL! Thanks for posting that pic!
Thomas Jefferson’s First Lady was his daughter Martha Randolph, who functioned as the primary hostess of the White House.
Sally Hemmings may have shared Jefferson’s bed but she never served in any capacity in the White House.
Sadly pathetic, yearning for validation. And all of a piece with naming an innocent child “Duchess.” “I AM. SOMEBODY!”
Back when Jefferson was alive, newspapers were accusing him of an affair with Hemmings. The publication of the rumor back then isn't proof that it's true, but it's not so far-fetched.
My wife verbally walloped a woman who stated this as fact in our church’s elder circle.
There exists a probability that it was one of the Jefferson clan and a possibility that it was our 3rd President.
Newspapers were political tools, then as now.
The key word there is “may”, because there is no evidence other than the rumors at the time to support the belief that Thomas Jefferson had any relationship with Sally Hemmings.
geez not this s**t again.
Even the DNA tests proved nothing. (they could only narrow the DNA to eight generations which is meaningless)
If she is the first first lady of blackness then where is the change?
“The key word there is may, because there is no evidence other than the rumors at the time to support the belief that Thomas Jefferson had any relationship with Sally Hemmings.”
TJ’s accuser was a drunkard who, soon after making this allegation, got so drunk he walked off the end of the street fell into the river and drowned.
As for the child, it was someone male somewhere in the Jefferson family, including brothers, cousins, etc.
But don’t let the facts bother anyone, or the details.
Never have never will - let that be their motto.
Actually, it is right now.

Somebody good at drawing cartoons make one of a race pimp pumping a bellows to fire the dying embers of racism back up into a raging inferno?
