NEW YORK (CBS News)
"60 Minutes"spokesman Kevin Tedesco confirmed 86-year-old Don Hewitt has died. Earlier this year, Hewitt was diagnosed with a small, contained tumor.
Hewitt was already a veteran CBS newsman in 1968 when he created "60 Minutes," pioneering the TV newsmagazine format. He served as executive producer of the program until his retirement in 2004.
Hewitt has been honored with the second annual Lifetime Achievement Emmy presented by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. In 1995, he was awarded the Founders Emmy by the International Council of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
He's also won the Director's Guild Association Honor for contributions to American culture (June 2002), the 2001 Carr Van Anda Award for his contribution to journalism, bestowed by the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University, and the 2000 Fred Friendly First Amendment Award from Quinnipiac College.
Hewitt is the author of Tell Me a Story: Fifty Years and 60 Minutes in Television (PublicAffairs, April 2001), in which chronicles his life as a newsman. He is also the author of the book Minute by Minute (Random House, 1985).
I just heard a clip on the radio where hewitt said the founding fathers were irrelevant extinct dinosaurs?
Anyone have that?
The show itself has been among the WALKING DEAD for quite some time.
Then, he would be wrong.
When it first aired I wouldn’t miss it, now you couldn’t pay me to watch it, or anything else on any of the alphabet nets.
Not surprising.
Awwwww, please do.
60 Minutes started out as a good program. Later it became totally corrupted by Political Correctness and and then a mouthpiece for the liberal cause.
I agree totally. I have boycotted 60 minutes for years.
I still wont watch but Don wont be missed by me one bit, good riddence
Well I found this one...
I plan to die at my desk. - Don Hewitt
Hunter S. Thompson died at his desk and he even picked the moment.
The really bad part is that for those of us around for the beginning we are gaining on him.
I think Rooney was the inspiration for Jerry Seinfeld's brand of comedy.
Well...now he can say that death and taxes are real with asking any dumb questions.

Hewitt allowed his show to be the mouthpiece for the Dems. Even St Peter at the pearly gates would be disgusted with this fool.
That may qualify as the understatement of the year. I can't remember a 60 Minutes piece that wasn't produced from a leftist's perspective. The last 20 years, it's been nothing but an in-kind contribution to the DNC.
After reading some of the absolutely vial, spiteful and downright nasty things that many have said on liberal sites about the death of Novak, I have nothing pleasant to say about Don Hewitt - so, I'll keep my peace.
With my ignorance identified, can you tell me why the hostility about this show from a right wing perspective? How did it favor left over right?
Also, Walter Cronkite was retired before I think I was born but he is hated by the right yet when he died the History or Discovery channel (I can't recall) showed a documentary of his life from Cronkite's memories and in it Cronkite was called biased for Nixon against Kennedy during that election. In fact it was declared by Kennedy that Cronkite hated him and had it in him (per the show).
Was it that Cronkite turned against the Vietnam war? But that is confusing to a young person like me because Nixon promised to end the Vietnam war and Johnson was president at the time Cronkite declared the war was not winnable.
So if you or any reader can help me out on this I would be much obliged.
If you lived through such events I am envious of your first hand accounts and would love to hear them.
Much thanks.
The average age of a “60 Minutes” viewer is deceased.
My assessment was based mostly on hostility expressed by my Dad and many freepers & other conservatives I've known through the years towards the journalists on the show.
The General Westmoreland defamation has been extensively covered here at FR, but there were other famous controversies about the integrity of their reporting as well,(See here at WIKI, scroll down to controversies.)
Even if this is a hatred for the 60 Minutes/CBS news that predates my birth - I still think knowing why Conservatives hated these shows will help me understand the times they lived through, nonetheless.
