Sweden slams paper over Israel allegations
The Local ^ | August 19 | Paul O'Mahony

"Sweden's embassy in Tel Aviv has sharply condemned Sweden's largest circulation newspaper Aftonbladet for publishing an article accusing the Israeli Defence Forces of harvesting the organs of Palestinians.

"The article in the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet is as shocking and appalling to us Swedes, as it is to Israeli citizens. We share the dismay expressed by Israeli government representatives, media and the Israeli public. This Embassy cannot but clearly distance itself from it," writes Ambassador Elisabet Borsiin Bonnier on the Swedish Embassy website.

Aftonbladet's article, 'Våra söner plundras på sina organ' ('They plunder the organs of our sons') has sparked outrage in Israel."

I'm shocked by this announcement.I would have expected complicit silence regarding this article from every member state of the limp-wristed Eurabian Federation (aka:the European Union).

Sweden’s problem is that they are overrun with Muslim immigrants, which is why it’s easy to find a large amount of Anti-Israel sentiment, they have to appease this large section of their population in order to avoid pissing them off, it helps to avoid the normal Muslim reactions, you know things like violent protests and riots, acts of arson, the threats of attacks and death against native citizens, etc. I would say they need to wake up before it’s too late, but I fear that advice may already come too late for them.

“Sweden’s problem is that they are overrun with Muslim immigrants, which is why it’s easy to find a large amount of Anti-Israel sentiment..”

- I don't blame you for jumping to this conclusion. We Swedes have definitely welcomed far too many Muslims and many of us still refuse to acknowledge there is a threat.

However, relations between Sweden and Israel were tense long before we began to import Muslims. One major reason is the 1948 assassination of Bernadotte, Swedish diplomat and grandson of King Oscar II of Sweden.

It goes without saying that an attack on our royal family is bound to “stir up some emotions”, even though we are such a PC, boring and Lutheran nation.

Apart from this, Bernadotte was and still is famous for having rescued thousands of Jews from Nazi German concentration camps during WWII.

Yet, relations between Israel and Sweden have improved the last 15 years or so and there are many Swedes who, like me, claim that Israel by all means has the right to defend itself.

By the way;

Today Aftonbladet, the “leading” newspaper in Scandinavia, loudly announced that Daniel Bailey of Antigua and Barbuda, one of the world's best sprinters aka training partner of Usain Bolt, had tested positive for illegal substances.

IAAF later denied this in an official statement.

A friend of mine who's a journalist once did a little bit of freelance work for Aftonbladet.

“- Never again”, was his comment to that particular experience.

WesternCulture, I'd always assumed Aftonbladet merited some journalistic credibility - evidently I was in serious error, I now realize.

Does the average Swede consider that paper to be as untrustworthy as we here in the US would consider one of the more disreputable tabloids to be?

- My answer would be no.

The impression I have is that few of us Swedes consider Aftonbladet to be a reliable news source. I guess SVT (Swedish counterpart of BBC) and papers like (rather) Conservative SvD (Svenska Dagbladet) and even PC, Liberal DN (Dagens Nyheter) ranks higher in this regard.

Aftonbladet (both the paper edition as well as their website) is very much of a thing people consult when feeling bored on the bus/subway/local train.

I believe most Swedes consider Britain and the US to have worse tabloids than we do. British tabloids like The Sun and News of The World often are ridiculed and despised over here.

But perhaps we have at least one true competitor to them?

Thanks for clarifying that for me with your explanation, WC. You also cleared up another question I had whether Aftenbladet & Dagbladet are related (I'd mistakenly thought they were just different editions of the same 'Bladet'). Now I can read their stories as an 'emptor' better equipped to more intelligently 'caveat'. ;-)

Thank you again.
