It's got to fit the narrative. You are right- twenty years ago it wouldn't have been uncovered. Ayn Rand recognized it fifty years ago and used it in Atlas Shrugged when a press photographer was covering the launch of the railway the elites so wanted to fail:
"Can't you people look doomed, please? I know that's what the editor wants!"
