Advertisers Deserting Fox News' Glenn Beck
Market Watch ^ | 8/14/09 | William Spain

Posted on 08/18/2009 7:08:18 AM PDT by steve-b

In what is shaping up to be one of the more effective boycott campaigns in years, advertisers are abandoning the "Glenn Beck" show on Fox News following the host's incendiary comments that President Barack Obama is a "racist" and has a "deep-seated hatred for white people."

Among the advertisers to pull spots from the popular cable talk show are Geico, owned by Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway /quotes/comstock/13*!brk.a (BRK .A 99,275, +275.00, +0.28%) /quotes/comstock/13*!brk.b (BRK .B 3,235, +5.20, +0.16%) ; Procter & Gamble /quotes/comstock/13*!pg/quotes/nls/pg (PG 52.49, +0.28, +0.54%) ; Sargento Cheese; and Progressive Insurance /quotes/comstock/13*!pgr/quotes/nls/pgr (PGR 16.01, -0.08, -0.50%) , according to the companies and Color of Change, one group that is organizing a campaign against the program....

Adding fuel to the fire is Donny Deutsch, a TV personality and head of the ad agency Deutsch Inc., which is part of the Interpublic Group /quotes/comstock/13*!ipg/quotes/nls/ipg (IPG 5.95, +0.02, +0.34%) . He, too, called for a boycott of Beck's show, saying on the air on the business-news channel CNBC that "this has to stop," and the "only way this stops" is if sponsors pull their support....

There is a reason Glenn targets those entities and individuals is because it is the frighting truth. We are on the doorstep to communism and one foot if firmly planted and the other is on it’s toe and when the health care and the cap and trade becomes law, the heel will hit the turf. It must be stopped. Hannity and Glenn are probably the only solid ones on Fox network to be on target. O’Reilly is a fool.

They really are shooting themselves in the foot aren’t they?

I make my own homemade pizza, and where I live there are no outlets for fresh Water Buffalo mozzarella so I use either fresh cow mozzarella or Progresso/Sargento. So much for using that as a last resort.

Heck, I think that many Freepers cancelled their GEICO policies alone!

Gun manufacturers do not use TV as an advertising medium, including Sig Sauer here in NH. With such a high incidence of gun ownership in the US, I’ve often wondered why they rely solely on print ads in trade, hobby and gun organization magazines.

If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we must be polite and say this is unlike a goose.

Isn’t GEICO owned by Berkshire Hathaway? If so, GEICO’s pulling its ads makes sense. It’s Sargento’s decision that doesn’t. I’d zero in on why Sargento pulled its ads. Bet there’s a story there...

the solution is to move from CNBC to FBC.

CNBC is in the tank and under DNC recievership.

Real financial news is hard to find outside of this.

FBC needs to “man up” and get serious. They need their own ARMY of Santellis.

They do dry cleaning in my area, too. I’ll be taking our business elsewhere.

If the inflammatory nature of the comments on a program overshadows our message and causes GEICO to be drawn into a national debate, we are likely to reconsider where we place our marketing messages, which is what we did.

Of course, withdrawing your advertising then pushes you even farther into the "national debate" but what the hey. Also, I believe Glenn made those comments over four weeks ago, and on another program, not his own.

Exactly. My entire family ( FIVE people) have switched from GEICO, stopped using P&G and Sargento, etc.

We have also emailed GB to tell him we support him, as well as contacting his remaining sponsors to tell them we support them as well.

This is nothing more than attack on the 1st amendment and a blatant show of double standards. It’s OK for the left to spew their racist, hate fill venom. It is not OK for the right to express their VIEWS or OPNINIONS.

As the ONE recently stated, he doesn’t want to hear from those in the way.

They can attack

Joe the Plumber
Sarah Palin
Michael Savage
Glenn Beck
Miss California
and anyone else that does not agree with them or challenges their philosophy. We are supposed to simply lay down and take it?

Not anymore. As I stated to GB, this is a cultural war for the heart and sould of America. We can play just as tough and dirty as the opposition. We outnumber them and we will not stand for this.

It is time to take back our country and restore it to what our Constitution says it should be.

Remember Florida Orange Juice dropping Rush? That really worked for them. Companies need to seperate their politics from their marketing or they will loose out.

I have contacted the three main sponsors and voiced my anger over their decision. I also informed them that I will not patronize their businesses ever again.

Harumphhhhh!!!

Fox News said through a spokeswoman that while some advertisers have "removed their spots from Beck," they have just shifted to "other programs on the network, so there has been no revenue lost."

Also boycotts work both ways.

I’ve started buying almost exclusively the Walmart Great Value brands - no fancy packaging - no advertising - even if it is just some brand name repackaged, it is cheaper and good quality - so Sargento and P&G can kiss my white behind
