DeMint's star rises in fight over health care
Charlotte Observer ^ | 8/11/09 | James Rosen

Soft-spoken, slight of physical stature and not even the senior senator in his state, Jim DeMint might not seem the most likely choice as a one-man Obama wrecking crew.

Yet the first-term S.C. Republican has quickly emerged as a leading voice against President Obama's bid to overhaul health care with new or expanded federal programs.

DeMint, rated across the political spectrum as one of the most conservative senators, has used his background as a former marketing firm owner to boil down the health care debate into pithy phrases.

In the past month, he has vowed to make health care Obama's “Waterloo” and urged conservative activists to help “break him.” He has likened the U.S. under Obama to Germany under Hitler and cast the health care fight as a “showdown between socialism and freedom.”

DeMint's growing legions of admirers – he's the third-most-followed member of Congress on Twitter.com – see him as a Jesse Helms throwback who tells it like it is and lets political chips fall where they may.

Obama singled out DeMint for criticism last month, and the Democratic National Committee launched a TV ad targeting him.

He seems to be a genuine reaganite. Not a ‘road to DesMoines’ type.

DeMint is a rock-solid Reagan conservative. I can forgive him for endorsing Romney. He’s a shoo-in for VP or even the Presidency, and if he runs, it would be tough to choose between him and Palin.

That’s why I’m hoping he runs. I’ve said it will take a real reaganite to unite the party. If he and Hunter get on the same ticket, I’ll have died and gone to Heaven.

Why isn’t the rest of the Republican party just as vocal or am I missing something?

It is time to halt “winner take all” primaries in our Republican party. John McAmnesty got a maximum of 37% in ANY primary. He was a liberal, “open Border” guy who was asked and considered running for VP in the Democrap party. WE NEED RUN OFFS!!!!!

There’s a few out there. But it is the usual suspects. Bachmann, Ryan and Hunter Jr. in the House. Sessions and Inhofe in the Senate.

Obama / Leftist media decry supposed, fear-mongering charges of “Death Panels” as baseless, but are silent regarding explicit and indistinquishable HHS / Congressional jargon requiring or incentivizing physicians to “initiate guided consultations” regarding “advance care planning” or “end of life planning” (HR 3200 sec. 1233) in order to meet bureaucratic goals (http://www.ahrq.gov/research/endliferia/endria.htm) for “reducing resource use”and “positively influencing terminal care costs” through such “consultations. Physicians to be subjected to de-facto quotas via “quality reporting initiative” measured against yet to be defined standards, to be endorsed or adopted by “consensus based organizations”. These “Advance Care Planning Consultations” to include “an explanation by the practitioner of the continuum of end-of-life services and supports available, including palliative care and hospice, and benefits for such services and supports that are available under this title. “

I would do anything withing my meager power to make this man president. Reagan did not have the Republican establishment on his side and he didn’t need it.

This guy is a former small business person, not just a “marketing” type.

He understands making payroll and paying for benefits. He’s the kind of guy I have to deliver 15% health rate increases to. I give him advice, but he makes the tough decisions on how to handle it, while still protecting and rewarding his employees.

Hard to imagine many in Congress holding a candle to his direct experience on the healthcare issue.
