Opponents dominate Cardin town hall meeting on health care (holy cow, MD is a liberal state)
Baltimore Sun ^ | August 11, 2009 | Paul West and Julie Scharper

Posted on 08/11/2009 5:41:14 AM PDT by sickoflibs

They began arriving four hours early, ignoring triple-digit heat-index levels for a chance to hoot and holler at Sen. Benjamin L. Cardin's health-care town hall meeting Monday night.

Outspoken opponents of the Democratic overhaul plan, which Cardin supports, vented their hostility at the first-term senator. In an echo of similar events around the country, most of those in the capacity crowd at Towson University were clearly hostile to the reform proposal and dismissive of Cardin's attempts to defend it.

Profound disbelief was the dominant mood, and Cardin got heckled almost nonstop. The audience jeered his answers and broke into raucous cheers when their comrades confronted the senator with dismissive remarks about the federal government and the Obama administration's overhaul plan.

They laughed dismissively when Cardin cited the World Health Organization and tried to shout down his attempt to present an outline of the legislative proposals in Washington. "Filibuster!" shouted one man, after Cardin's presentation had eaten up almost a third of the 90-minute event.

Many in the crowd laughed uproariously when Cardin said illegal immigrants would not be entitled to coverage under the Democratic plan. And they jumped to their feet in one of the longest, loudest ovations of the night after an audience member asked why tort reform wasn't a feature of the health care overhaul.

Another questioner commended the senator for showing up to take questions. "I didn't think you had it in you," he said, before asking if Cardin would put himself under any public plan Congress creates. ("I'm in a public plan. It's called Medicare," the senator replied.)

This was in Towson just north on Baltimore City in Baltimore county and inside the Beltway 695. This is a very liberal democrat area but Republicans live further North and can get there down 83 South and then York Road..

“Many in the crowd laughed uproariously when Cardin said illegal immigrants would not be entitled to coverage under the Democratic plan.”

Unlike many of our political “servants”, most of us have read at least portions of what has been proposed. Cardin has obvioulsy not, OR he is in a backhanded way calling his constituents stupid, racist or both.

They laughed dismissively when Cardin cited the World Health Organization

The WHO did not rank the quality care. Their ranking had to do with BS criteria such as 'fairness', which was one of two categories that drug the US ranking down.

...suprising that the Baltimore Sun would print anything that shows opposition to Obama...Baltimore is a black majority city and has been governed by black Democrats for years now...who have promptly run it into the ground BTW.

This in Maryland, which has a two-to-one Dem to GOP ratio?

More angry racist tea-bagging health insurance company corporate goons giving Ben Cardin a hard time LOL. What is amazing is this is a very liberal state and Townson is a very liberal area, overwhelming pro-Obama

Just an off but related question. Did the "McCain Wins or we die' crowd predict this? No, they predicted over and over that Obama would pass anything he wants unopposed, (like 1993+1994 ???) . What about Al Frankin and that 60th Senate Seat? LOL You dont see much of Al.

This political schmuck still doesn’t get it; his arrogance is up front for all to see and it’s astounding and reprehensible. The voters must send him packing. One can tell that this Senator doesn’t give a damn about anything his constituents had to say. He wants power and he wants to feed his arrogant ego.

So, the Senator is saying his only recourse for his personal health care is Medicare- and not that afforded to U.S. Senators and House members? Somehow I doubt that is true.

I saw that on FNC. Always being a contrarian I am very wary of that argument. Medicare and Socialist security are middle class (and apparently now conservative) welfare AND redistribution and this will keep it near impossible to ever reduce the budget/deficit after Obama is gone.

"I'm in a public plan. It's called Medicare," the senator replied.

Is that the same Medicare that Obama's plan will eliminate???

Methinks the Senator spewed falsehoods.

The Sun’s website had the twitter feed from one of the reporters on it yesterday night.

The crowd was described as “mostly white and over 50”.

The reporter seemed to be genuinely surprised that so many people showed up in opposition to the plan.

On an unrelated subject, did anyone watch the Romney/Kennedy video from 1994 posted here? Holy Cow - he’s trying to out-liberalize Ted Kennedy.

Cardin tried to dispel that notion, putting it in the category of another anti-Obama issue that has caught fire on the right. "There would be nothing in a health overhaul plan about terminating people's care at the end of life," the senator said. "And by the way, President Obama is also a citizen of the United States."

Show us the long form.

It’s amazing, isn’t it?
I heard Dennis Moore (3rd, KS) tell the same lie about not covering illegal aliens this morning.

And as for the “tort reform” issue, I actually heard an honest democrat analyst say “you can’t expect DEMOCRATS to do something that hurts trial lawyer - be serious.”

Security was unusually heavy. About 10 minutes after Cardin began speaking, university security officers marched through the audience and positioned themselves at the edge of the stage in a show of force.

Shades of totalitarianism!! The suggestion of force, EVEN THOUGH NO VIOLENCE HAS BEEN THREATENED to or ENACTED on ANY Congresscritter at ANY of these Townhalls, is stunning. It suggests no only the force of jackbooted thugs, but also demonstrates what cowards these Congresscritters are!!

These reprehensible politicians don’t care about your health or the care you get; they want the power to decide who lives and who dies. They want to control every aspect of your life. They want to legalize murder by denying care to whomever they want. Anyone that thinks these sewer rats care about anything other than their own power and egos better think again.

These Elitist politicians stand in front of their constituents and speak with their arrogance hanging out for one and all to see and then try to tell them that they CARE. Give me a break!. Whose stupid enough to buy that BS except the MSM?

RE :”They want to legalize murder by denying care to whomever they want. “

Denying care? You mean you wont be able to pay for medical treatment if you have money? Not likely. More likely it will just be even more expensive if you try to pay for it, because you will be outside of the government price controls and the provider can cost shift to you.

Government refusing to pay for a service is not murder, let’s not co-opt the left’s talking points. This is exactly what Micheal Moore says in Sicko that insurance companies kill people.
