Attempting to change the constitution by simple vote is what got Honduras and Nigeria where they are today. (And Nicaragua tomorrow)

Agreed. While a referendum vote may be appropriate at the state level, it would be dangerous at the national level. The ammendment process for the U.S. Constitution was intentionally made hard to keep capricious change from occuring.
