NEW YORK – Budd Schulberg, the son of a studio boss who defined the Hollywood hustle with his novel "What Makes Sammy Run?" and later proved himself a player with his Oscar-winning screenplay for "On the Waterfront," died Wednesday at age 95.

His wife, Betsy Schulberg, said he died of natural causes at his home in Westhampton Beach, on Long Island. She said he was taken to a nearby medical center, where doctors unsuccessfully tried to revive him.

"He was very loved and cherished," she said.

"On the Waterfront," directed by Elia Kazan and filmed in Hoboken, N.J., was released in 1954 to great acclaim and won eight Academy Awards. It included one of cinema's most famous lines, uttered by Marlon Brando as the failed boxer Malloy: "I coulda been a contender."

An indictment of the close relationship between the ILA, organized crime, and the Hudson County Democratic machine. One of my favorite movies, and I am looking at my Italian poster of this film as I type this.

....I even liked the Contender scene when DeNiro did it in “Raging Bull”

.....to me the most interesting scene in the movie was Mauldin’s speech in the ship’s hold...I believe it portrayed the roots of the whole “activist priest” movement.

Not as well known as Waterfront, but Schulberg also wrote “A Face in the Crowd.” A great little film with Andy Griffith as a charismatic but untrustworthy rascal from Arkansas (sounds familiar, yes?). Patricia Neal, Walter Matthau, Anthony Franciosa and young Lee Remick co-star.

Here’s one of my favorite clips - Vitajex!

How much different would Streetcar and Waterfront been had Brando played Kowalski like Malloy and vice versa ? ;-D

When you are 95 no matter what you die of it is natural causes. You could get hit by a truck, its natural causes. If you was younger you would have got out the way.

Someone here once said that ‘A Face in the Crowd’ foretold Bill Clinton’s career.
