Reality Check
Posted by Macon Phillips

If you’ve tuned into the news in the past few days, it’s clear that the debate about health insurance reform has heated up as Senators and Representatives return to their home states and districts. A troubling trend has also emerged: as more people become engaged in the issue, defenders of the status quo have responded by muddying the waters with more wild rumors and scare tactics.

It’s time for a reality check.

Today the White House is rolling out a new website that focuses on what reform really means for you and your family, debunks some common myths along the way and provides you with online tools and content to share the facts with friends, family and anyone else in your social network.

The first set of videos addresses a wide scope of topics and debunks some of those common myths:
CEA Chair Christina Romer details how health insurance reform will impact small businesses.
Domestic Policy Council Director Melody Barnes tackles a nasty rumor about euthanasia and clearly describes how reform helps families.
Matt Flavin, the White House’s Director of Veterans and Wounded Warrior Policy, clears the air about Veteran’s benefits.
Kavita Patel, M.D., a doctor serving in the White House’s Office of Public Engagement, explains that health care rationing is happening right now and how reform gives control back to patients and doctors.
Robert Kocher, M.D., a doctor serving on the National Economic Council, debunks the myth that health insurance reform will be financed by cutting Medicare benefits.
In a video first released last week, Linda Douglass from the White House Health Reform Office addresses fears about the end of our private insurance system and reiterates that if you like your current plan you can keep it.
There is also a handy FAQ about health insurance reform.

Moving forward, we’ll use this platform to provide you with the latest “Reality Checks” and tools to combat misinformation.

We also want to hear from you. If you have questions about health insurance reform or suggestions on what topics we should address next, please let us know.

The road ahead will surely reveal more aggressive efforts from defenders of the status quo to confuse and scare Americans with half-truths and outright lies. We’re all too familiar with the time-tested tactics that opponents of reform have used for decades to prevent the meaningful change our health insurance system needs.

Now, with what the President calls “the best chance of reform we have ever had,” it’s time for citizens across the country get the facts about reform and work on the grassroots level to add a healthy dose of reality into the national discussion on health insurance reform.

New State-by-State Reports Show How Health Insurance Reform Will Benefit All Americans

HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius today released Stable and Secure Health Care for America, a series of new state-by-state reports outlining how health insurance reform will improve health care for all Americans. Sebelius announced the availability of the new reports as part of a Webcast — “Health Insurance Reform: What’s In It For You?” — where Sebelius and top HHS officials took questions from the American people and discussed the importance of health insurance reform. The new reports are available at www.HealthReform.gov.

“These reports show how health insurance reform will help Americans save money, get better care, strengthen their insurance if they already have it, and afford insurance if they don’t,” said Sebelius. “Every American will benefit when we pass health insurance reform.”

The reports released today show reform will:

Lower health care costs;
Increase health care choices by protecting what works and fixing what’s broken; and
Assure quality, affordable care for all Americans.
Today’s reports are the second in a series of state-by-state reports on health care across the country. Earlier this summer, Sebelius released The Health Care Status Quo in Your State, a series of state by state reports on the current state of health care in America. The reports are available at http://www.healthreform.gov/healthcarestatus.html.

“Obama’s Three Stooges”
by Jed Babbin
08/10/2009

SNIPPET: “But they have a lot on their side. Especially Obama’s three stooges: the SEIU, AARP and PhRMA.

Pelosi’s strategy memo also said, “The Leadership is working in close coordination with the White House and outside groups (including but not limited to HCAN, Families USA, AFSCME, SEIU, AARP, etc.) to ensure complementary efforts during August.” Complimentary means opposing the protests of concerned Americans.

The three stooges are all members of a coalition of union, lobbying and business groups called “Heathy Economy Now” which is spending an enormous amount of money on television ads aimed at the Blue Dog Democrats, seeking to push them into supporting Obamacare.”

SNIPPET: “Obama and his congressional cohort are in a state of near-panic because Americans are speaking out in huge numbers against their effort to nationalize health care. Voters rightly doubt that Obamacare will do anything to improve the way they receive health care or limit its cost.

It won’t do either, and the more Americans speak out to stop it, the more likely we’ll be able to have the best healthcare system in the world: that’s the one we have now, not the one Obama’s three stooges want to shove us into.”

“White House ‘Reality Check’ Web Site Claims Health Care Reform ‘Would Not Add One Penny to Deficit’ Despite CBO Reports to Contrary”
Monday, August 10, 2009
By Penny Starr, Senior Staff Writer

SNIPPET: “(CNSNews.com) – A new Web site launched Monday by the Obama administration to rebut alleged disinformation about the administration’s efforts to reform the health care system claims that reform “would not add one penny to the deficit”—despite the fact that the two health care reform bills that have been analyzed by the Congressional Budget Office are predicted by the CBO to increase the national debt by $239 billion and $1.042 trillion respectively.

The administration, meanwhile, has not produced any health-care reform legislation that has been independently determined to be deficit-neutral.”
