For unknown reasons, they abbreviated pence using the letter “d”.

I don't know the derivation for that abbreviation, but it's still used for the word "penny" in the sizing of nails, as in "10d nails", meaning "10 penny nails".

the abreviation for pence has always been ‘d’ in Commonwealth countries.

pounds, shillings and pence is/was written:

Pound Sign. S (for shilling) d (for pence.)
