Iran could complete the manufacture of an atomic bomb within a year, and is just waiting for supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to give the go-ahead, according to intelligence sources quoted in a report by The Times on Monday.

The sources were further quoted by the British newspaper as saying that the Islamic republic had put a stop to its nuclear arms research program back in 2003 as it had already developed the means to detonate a nuclear warhead which could be launched on the Shahab-3 long-range missile.

Why can’t you be the Secretary of State? ;)

“What do you suggest America do? Rather, if you were CIC, what would you do?”

For starters, I would chart a course that strengthened the US. This course would include:

1. Strong efforts directed to deficit reduction. (One of our ‘swords’ is our economic sword. With our huge deficit, and the diminished stature of the dollar, that sword has dulled. Economic sanctions don't mean as much when your stature as an economic superpower is diminished, even if its just perceptual).

2. Modernization of all US weapons systems. (I know that there are a lot of new weapons systems under development, but this must continue to be a priority. It's not the size of our military, it's the advanced training and technology of our military that is a major deterrent to our enemies).

3. Depoliticizing the CIA and restructuring this agency to make it stronger and better at foreign espionage. I would also create a joint task force of the CIA and FBI that were charged with cooperating in the vetting of ALL elected federal officials to determine whether they have foreign influence.

4. Pushing for an altered immigration policy that favored immigration of those who add to the strength of the country (e.g. bring technological skills etc.), and a strong effort to ensure that immigrants were balanced such that all ethnicities and countries/regions of origin were equally represented (i.e. more from pro-Western pro-capitalism regions/counties).

At the same time I would promote an “Off the record - nothing off the table” foreign policy, (i.e. Iran needs to be told that we will have submarines in close enough proximity to their borders such that if they ever set off a nuke their entire infrastructure will be destroyed before they even know what happened, and that the leadership will be strongly targeted.)

WHY isn’t Iran using the gun-barrel design, like we used on Hiroshima, so technically simple it does not even NEED to be tested? The are going for an IMPLOSION device! You know that THAT means!

I think there is a good chance American troops could go in with Israeli air cover to topple the government even before Iran finishes the bomb(they won’t give them the chance).

Yeah.... Good thing we have the Israelis around to provide air cover. The USAF just doesn't have what it takes. (/rolling eyes)

>Is it possible for this administration to get their priorities straight?

They already are straight. - for them.
They just aren't what we believe that the priorities of America should be.

How is Jason Isaacs, part of your small and scattered tribe?

I'm not trying to say anything bad about American pilots, but I'm pretty sure the Israelis are better. Most of the missions our pilots get to do are training. The Israelis are on the brink of life and death and are constantly in the middle of real action. It'd be worth going into Iran just for the opportunity to fight alongside such an elite force.

Hell, not even Jordan, where most of them came from when it was called Trans-Jordan.

Jordan? It would be accurate to state they they were expelled from Jordan, rather than that they came from there - after a bitter civil war that very nearly toppled the government of Jordan itself.

Jordan is one of the last places on Earth that wants that trash.
Thank you for your post.

Are you sure you don't know what tribe I'm referring to?

Give you a hint: his parents live in Herzliya.

But then again we have Kim Jong, Putin and Medvedev, Chavez, and the rest of the gang so we have some competition.

Hint: the USAF has been flying combat missions for the past 8 years.

Iran already has the bomb. At the time, I first broke the story on my blog I had contacts who were directly involved - since that time I have been unable to get more info.

I chose to release the information (not all) but I did and I fear that I might be partially responsible for what transpired to my contacts.

There are more parties involved (including Western parties) who are involved in helping Iran in this achievement, but for those that think Iran can be stopped, the window of opportunity has long since passed.

Iran is now waiting, waiting for the opportune moment to make their move - and when they do we will hear about "western intelligence failures" - I wish I could say and do more, but I cant

What did your sources tell you Israel was going to do?

Not billy goat nubs aye.

I watched an older movie the other day (robin williams) about people who had chips in the brain to record everything they see/exp in life so that after they die it could be edited to show all the feel good stuff to be shown at the funeral.

Invasively creepy.

At that time, they genuinely feared that an attack was imminent (I remember talk of "weather conditions" and when the attack would come), but it never came and that baffled many I suppose who thought that the West would prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

Looking back I think my source was trying to reach out, reach out to the West. Its all too late now. I've lost all contact.

At that time Iran had built three crude weapons, but was unable to deliver them - not sure how far along it is now.

If I had to guess, I would say that Iran is waiting for the time to use what they have, in a sense we have a situation similar to mutally assured destruction, but based more on public and world opinion. Iran does not want to be seen as the beligerent and it perhaps waiting until they are attacked to use what they have against Israeli and US interests.

On another note, perhaps related, there are very recent rumours of an very big attack (unlike anything that can be imagined) on western forces in afghanistan that will force the west to flee. My source seemed quite credible on this and so I've been tuned into CNN recently to watch what happens. It is supposed to be coming soon, how soon I dont know.

What kind of yield is anticipated? My estimated guess is that Iran has something of a device.

They were described to me as “atomic” and not “nuclear”.
