Kennedy is making a final press for universal healthcare, from his sickbed

As Congress wrestles with legislation to give Americans access to quality care, which the Democrat worked toward for 46 years, the senator is sidelined with brain cancer, but not out of the game.

Faye Fiore and Noam N. Levey July 25, 2009

Reporting from Washington -- Ted Kennedy wakes up mornings in his house on Cape Cod to a packet of news clippings put together by his wife. If there's a hearing going on in Washington, he watches on his computer.

Five hundred miles away, Congress is wrestling with historic legislation to give every American access to quality healthcare. It is the moment the Massachusetts Democrat has worked toward for 46 years. But instead of marshaling the crowning achievement of his political career, he is sidelined, battling brain cancer.

"He has lived for this day when America would finally extend this right to every citizen. There's no doubt if he could, he would be here in the thick of this," Kennedy's son Patrick, a Democratic congressman from Rhode Island, said in a recent interview, sitting on a bench on the Capitol grounds with tears in his eyes.

But history's third longest-serving senator isn't out of the game yet. Exerting what influence he can from his sickbed, he advises his aides in Washington over the phone. He has made himself the poster child of what he calls "my life's cause," and is using his illness in a final press for universal health care.

Kennedy, 77, seems determined not to miss this. He has outlasted medical expectations since doctors diagnosed a malignant tumor last spring, and is not above expending every last bit of his political capital to deliver the bill he will be most remembered for.

“Universal” health care isn’t going to bring Mary Jo back, Chappaquiddick Ted.

I hope 'The bill failed to pass!' is what finally pushes the destructive old POS under the grass.

Kennedy Is Making A Final Press For Universal Healthcare, From His Sickbed...while receiving the best of care (very costly) at the age of 77, which will be denied to millions of senior Americans if his plan goes through.

Wow, just wow. Staying alive to finish his plans. What about the plans of all the people that these "Gods" are going to cut short?

Don’t forget that it was he who opened the door to the 3rd world tidal wave with his immigration reform in the 60s. When you think Minnesota is now Somalia north, when you think of the Southwest as Aztlan, when California is now Chinese, be sure to thank Kennedy.

“Cross Over the Bridge” by Patti Page should be the first thing he hears every morning!

Kennedy should be counseled on dying so the resources he’s using can be used on someone younger.

The Dems are going to try to exploit Kennedy's deathbed wish for universal care to be a memorial for him.

Kennedy already has a memorial--Chappaquidick bridge/river. I say let that be his memorial.

Bring it on: Challenge the Senator to rely solely on the benefits available under the proposed legislation.

I view TK like I do the jhadists, who think they will get 70 virgins.. You see TK wants fame for having written a lot of this Healthcare like Hill did, but won’t get it. It will not pass, if we all pray against it daily. So close but so far away, or he won’t live to see the murdering that was written...no glory, no satisfaction.

In the case of jhadists, there are probably 70 virgins in hell, but in hereafter there is no sex. It’ll be like Healthcare, you’ll have it, but can’t use it.

Yeh - way to go Ted! Now that your illness may take your life soon, its okay to condemn the rest of us to death by denying life sustaining treatments for us. But you got yours didn’t you? And so did the Judge with the pancreatic cancer...she’d have been dead by now if she didn’t get her treatment!

And now with your dying breath...you will commit mass murder with the rest of the treasonous reps who push for the deathcare, by allowing human life to dwindle, & at the same time, keep all of your bank accounts full!

It’s a good thing Teddy gets the gold plated plan from the Senate, and not socialized health care, otherwise, he’d already be dead or shipped off to the Soylent Green factory to be turned into scotch flavored crackers.

Reminds me of a Bible verse....

If only he had tried as hard to save Mary Jo.

Why hasn’t this lunatic been ousted? It’s obvious to the entire nation that he can no longer fulfill his obligations to the Senate. He’s just another Democrat sucking money and power from the U.S. taxpayers. Replace him with someone that can actually do the job.
