Evangelist Alamo found guilty of kid-sex crimes
He calls himself 'prophet that went to jail for the Gospel'
Evangelist Tony Alamo, left, is escorted from federal court in Texarkana, Ark., on Thursday. A jury convicted him Friday of taking five girls across state lines for sex.
TEXARKANA, Ark. - Tony Alamo, a one-time street preacher who became an outfitter of the stars and fought the federal government over claims he underpaid followers for church work, was convicted Friday of taking five girls across state lines for sex.
Alamo stood silently as the verdict was read, a contrast to his occasional mutterings during testimony. His five victims sat looking forward in the gallery. One, a woman he "married" at age 8, wiped away a tear.
"I'm just another one of the prophets that went to jail for the Gospel," Alamo called to reporters afterward as he was escorted to a waiting U.S. marshal's vehicle.
Shouts of "Bye, bye, Bernie" Alamo was born Bernie Lazar Hoffman came from a crowd gathered on the Arkansas side of the courthouse, which straddles the Texas-Arkansas border.
Jurors were convinced Alamo had had sex with the girls when they were underage, but deliberated for more than a day to ensure that they considered everything, jury foreman Frank Oller of Texarkana said.
"That was the evidence. That was proven," Oller said. "We came up with a full decision that we are quite satisfied with."

I got some advice for you Tony. If you drop the soap in the shower, pick it up slow and easy like.
Does that fall under spare the "rod" and spoil the minister?
He’s not another prophet who went to jail for the Gospel. He is just one more preadator off the street who used the Gospel to enhance his sexual contact list.
When he says he’s just another prophet going to prison for the gospel, I wonder what gospel he’s referring to?
If evangelists were allowed to marry...oh, wait...nevermind.
“I’m just another one of the prophets that went to jail for the Gospel,” Alamo called to reporters afterward as he was escorted to a waiting U.S. marshal’s vehicle.

Uh...can someone show me in the Gospel where it says it’s ok to molest children?
His sins were, at least, heterosexual.
There are only two kinds of sin: mortal and venial.
Horrible mental picture. Horrible.
His sins were, at least, heterosexual.

Un-frikkin’ believable. That is your takeaway from this story.
At least the 9 year old he molested was a girl?!?!?!?!?!
What kind of a human being thinks that way?
That's your opinion.
According to my Bible there is no a gradation of sins.
I wasn't meaning to sound like I was rating his sin level, rather the level of mental disturbance it demonstrates.
So a man who molests a 9 year old girl is less mentally disturbed than a man who molests a 9 year old boy? And you calculate that how?
Read into it whatever you want.
If my child was raped I'd rather it be by someone of the opposite sex.
I don't need to justify "what kind of human being" I am to you for feeling that way.
“There are only two kinds of sin: mortal and venial.”
There is only ONE kind of sin: SIN
I don't feel any need to prove a point to you.
I think rape of someone of the same sex, of any age, is more whacked than someone of the opposite sex.
I think rape of anyone of any sex or age is whacked.
Now, with all due respect to you or anyone else who wants to take me to task because you think your opinion is superior and I owe it to you to spend time responding to your challenging my right to a different opinion, I'm afraid I have a life I have to live instead.
Calm down.
My post was directed at the invisib1e hand
Sorry, Pubbie.
My post should have been addressed to dmz, who stated "That is your takeaway from this story.", when my original post was not about the story, but a response to the joking reference--by "the invisible hand"-- to the argument about molesting priests possibly being blamed on priests not being allowed to marry.
Thanks for the concern, by the way, but I'm calm.
