Perry raises possibility of states' rights showdown with White House over healthcare

AUSTIN — Gov. Rick Perry, raising the specter of a showdown with the Obama administration, suggested Thursday that he would consider invoking states’ rights protections under the 10th Amendment to resist the president’s healthcare plan, which he said would be "disastrous" for Texas.

Interviewed by conservative talk show host Mark Davis of Dallas’ WBAP/820 AM, Perry said his first hope is that Congress will defeat the plan, which both Perry and Davis described as "Obama Care." But should it pass, Perry predicted that Texas and a "number" of states might resist the federal health mandate.

"I think you’ll hear states and governors standing up and saying 'no’ to this type of encroachment on the states with their healthcare," Perry said. "So my hope is that we never have to have that stand-up. But I’m certainly willing and ready for the fight if this administration continues to try to force their very expansive government philosophy down our collective throats."

They should also be saying this to Social Security, Medicaid, and Medicare. None of those are federal issues, certainly not constitutional. If they are going to say this about health care this opens the door to those other unlawful programs.

How about passing this law in Texas:

"Participation in Federally mandated insurance and retirement programs shall be voluntary for citizens of the State of Texas."

Now that's some pro-choice legislation I can get excited about.

Me, too! Opt out of 15% of my income being taxed right off the top!

It’s sad that Perry is like that - he’s a freakin’ AGGIE for Reveille’s sake! AN AGGIE! I give my Aggie wife grief all the time over ‘her AGGIE governor’ (she doesn’t claim him either).

But, even still, I’d rather have “Gov. Goodhair”, the no cattle hat wearing (Can’t believe he’s REALLY an) Aggie than Kinky or KBH.

However, if his ACTIONS would follow his WORDS, I’d be a happier citizen of the Republic of Texas.

"He's just posturing for his next re-election bid."

Correct.

The recent raids on the queer bars by TABC was also a campaign ploy to satisfy the religious right.

Perry grew up in rural west Texas, on a ranch, or maybe a cotton farm.

His degree is animal science. Probably minored in range management.

I've not always been a fan of Gov Perry, especially with his support of the NAFTA superhighway, BUT in this instance, I am saying "GO PERRY GO!" If 0bozo's stupidity & marxist ideology is hell bent on forcing socialized, rationed, health care down our throats, then it is time for the secessions of Texas & other patriotic states to begin. My sister & her family and my brother live in Texas, and I would move there in a heartbeat if necessary to help support our Am Rev II.

you are right on with that asesment. she was one of the 8 republicans that pushed the SCHIP bill through. i sent a scathing e-mail to here office on her bonehead vote. recieved a cookie cutter response 8 weeks later. the only reason that i can see for her vote on that bill was to gather hispanic vote for her run for governor in ‘010. she is a jelly fish (no backbone)

The kindling has been gathered, and the fire has been laid.
What will be the flash point?

It’s not much in effect in terms of resistance, but it does let them know where we stand.

Perry...the man perfectly willing to strip any and all Texans to build the globalists’ North American Union highway...

Anyway, glad to see he is up for reelection and suddenly finding the idea of American freedom somewhere in his globalist agenda. Kay is would not bother to even fake it.
