If Marijuana Is Legal, Will Addiction Rise?
The New York Times ^ | July 20, 2009 | The Editors

Posted on 07/20/2009 11:11:12 AM PDT by cryptical

A New York Times article on Sunday discussed the debate over whether more and more potent types of cannabis affect the levels of addiction to the drug. This particular issue has become part of the larger debate over whether marijuana should be legalized or decriminalized.

Antidrug activists say that if the drug is legalized, more people will use it and addiction levels, made worse by the increased potency, will rise too. Legalization advocates note that pot addiction is not nearly as destructive as, say, abuse of alcohol. What would be the effect of legalization or decriminalization on marijuana abuse and addiction?

Everyone I know who continued to smoke pot after high school (mid 70’s) exibit the same hair trigger tempers, depressions, mood swings, difficulty focusing, rationalizing moral issues to suit their current situation, dramatic outbursts, and daily dependence that meth heads do
_____________

Did these folks consume anything else besides reefer? Any booze, blow, or acid? Cigarettes?

How is it that you are able to isolate that it was the reefer that caused these symptoms you observed?

Same symptoms while all other factors except daily pot smoking varied, no other addictions other than cigs, known them all since elementary school.

I’ve known a number of top-knotch engineers that smoke marijuana regularly.

Regularly as in every day? I don't believe that.

I’ve never known anyone “addicted” to pot.

How do you know? Go over to a chronic stoner's house, one that smokes multiple times every day.

Get there before he takes his 1st hit of the day, and stash his stash. If he asks you if you've seen it, tell him he had it in his hand just a few minutes ago.

Than just wait 'n see....

I've heard weed and coffee called the suburban speedball before :)

Your analysis, simple and straightforward as it is, is approximately a mile over the head of some posters.

That's okay. If this thread represents the best of the pro-criminalization side then I expect marijuana to be legal in a few short years.

______

This seems to be the hardest part for non-users to get their heads around.

A lot of really smart people, people with real jobs, smoke reefer on a regular basis.

I don’t understand why it is so difficult to believe, given that we know tons of smart people having a couple of drinks/glasses of wine/several beers a day.

I suspect that, for some, it is the completely ridiculous idea that marijuana is a toggle switch (on/off) where alcohol use is a potentiometer (turn a little, little buzz, or turn all the way on = drunk), if that analogy works for y’all.

If there's anything this thread has exposed, it's that pot heads are anything but mellow.

Now that’s a very good point, that I hadn’t specifically considered... LOL...

Yeah, I guess being against murder, theft, assault, abortion, and all sorts of other things, including illegal drugs — would be disconcerting to those who wish to engage in murder and mayhem and illegal activities... LOL...

The problem is we have not gone far enough. We need to outlaw alcohol, cigarettes, caffeine and a lot of other dangerous things like motorcycles, bicycles, boats, mountain climbing, camping, and of course guns.

But there is nobody dumber than a alcohol drinker. If you go to a bar sober and watch the people, it blows your mind how stupid they all are. Pot smokers are rocket scientists even when high compared to alcohol users.

Yeah, but people do get caught and they do “get away” with it at times, too. There’s a relative who got caught by a cop, and he let them (there were two in the car) get away with it. He told them to throw it away in a dumpster. There was a church dumpster nearby and they were going to go over there and he said, “Not there, that’s a church!”.... LOL..

So, they went another block and dumped it somewhere else.

BUT... after it was dark, they went back and got it again... :-)

Crazy potheads... LOL...

Sorry for the delay in my reply to you.

"Probably we need to see actual data on who the Obama voters are, but I don't find any data on pot smokers verses non pot smokers pertaining to the presidential election."

Yup, who knows how the vote split without actual data. Anecdotal evidence can point both ways.

"I tend toward legalization, but I just can't get around the fact that we already have a huge supply of people with reduced brain capacity from this stuff."

Yes, stoned people are sort of dumb but they don't stay stoopid when they're not stoned. One thing they certainly are is horny- pot is an aphrodisiac.

Really and truly.
