If Marijuana Is Legal, Will Addiction Rise?
The New York Times ^ | July 20, 2009 | The Editors

Posted on 07/20/2009 11:11:12 AM PDT by cryptical

A New York Times article on Sunday discussed the debate over whether more and more potent types of cannabis affect the levels of addiction to the drug. This particular issue has become part of the larger debate over whether marijuana should be legalized or decriminalized.

Antidrug activists say that if the drug is legalized, more people will use it and addiction levels, made worse by the increased potency, will rise too. Legalization advocates note that pot addiction is not nearly as destructive as, say, abuse of alcohol. What would be the effect of legalization or decriminalization on marijuana abuse and addiction?

Self-righeousness does not excuse your disregard for the limits imposed on the power of the federal government by the Constitution.

If you do not wish to abide by the limitations imposed by the division of power inherent in a constitutional republic, perhaps you need to find a differnt form of government to live under.

Obama says I'm a terrorist, Al Sharpton says I'm a racist, Fred Phelps says I'm going to Hell, and you say I'm a criminal.

I'll take that, and you can all come get what you think you're due.

Possession of less than an ounce isn’t even a jailable offense in my state. And yours. maybe you should be fighting for Oregon to re-criminalize possession. I doubt you’ll get very far. :-) LOL :-) LOL

I’m in Oklahoma right now, and you don’t want to get caught with weed here... :-)

In Oregon, I listened to some tell me about how they got a medical marijuana card..., too... Boy!... those criminals are inventive... I’ve got to hand them that... (and the people that I’ve heard about personally with the M.M., they’re not sick, they just like to smoke up a storm...). Of course, criminals “live” to find a way around laws...

Yes, but probably not if you had been drunk the nite before.

Depends how drunk.

That’s probably true, but in this context, it’s like the tests for drug use. Pee tests only tell if you did something a few days prior. It’s usually not hard to tell if someone is still drunk, while not so, if they used marijuana 2 days ago.

the pot smokers are the ones who are trying to change me
_____

Absolutely false. No one here is advocating that you become a pot smoker. A change to the prevailing law does nothing to you personally.

They want me to be for allowing criminals to get off and get a “pass” on their criminal behavior... :-)

I don’t intend to get married to a homosexual but I’m not going to vote for those particular people to get married to homosexuals (and they don’t even necessarily want me to become a homosexual, either...).

Again, absolutely false. We (those in favor of changing the law) want absolutely nothing from you. Zip. Nada. Zilch.

We want to change the law. Period. End of sentence.
And your world would be entirely unchanged. You don’t smoke now, and you won’t smoke then.

You said — Again, absolutely false. We (those in favor of changing the law) want absolutely nothing from you. Zip. Nada. Zilch.

But, I’m going to be voting against making criminal behavior legal. That’s what you want me to change (i.e., “my vote”), along with a pile of other conservative voters... :-)

Ok given my spelling/grammar ect is awfull...(I was more of a Math/Science guy in school.) But tell me what you really think...LOL I wouldn’t argue about side effects of “Chronic” Marijuana use...They can be severe..Depression..Lack of Motivation...Lung Problems.

However I think an ADULT should be able to make those Pro/Con decisions for themselves. I think their are as many good effects from Marijuana as there are Alcohol or Tabacco...or Asprin for that matter.

How many people’s livers get damaged by APAP every year? How many have died from Asprin OD? But Asprin has good medical uses when used responsibly. (People having heart problems).

There are side effects to everything all you can do is weigh the Cost Vs. Benefits. Everything in life has risk. All the ban on Marijuana seems to do is increase funding for law enforcement and allow invasion into people’s lives and property.

None of this will likely matter if Lord Zero gets the stinking health care bill passed....The Most Mercifull Barry will be telling you what you can Eat, Drink, or medicines to take.......

How would anyone know if someone was addicted to marijuana?

Because they would probably develop PMS symptoms.

Everyone I know who continued to smoke pot after high school (mid 70's) exibit the same hair trigger tempers, depressions, mood swings, difficulty focusing, rationalizing moral issues to suit their current situation, dramatic outbursts, and daily dependence that meth heads do, just not as intense (also, I doubt any of the friends and acquaintances that got into meth are still alive - they all disappeared by the time I started college).

Achievement and learning for the sake of knowledge is not nearly as keen, and for good reason - CRS hits hard and heavy - personally, I can't afford any more of that w/o drugs, but at least I can remember what I said a minute ago and who I said it to...usually :~)

That hasn’t been my experience. I’ve known a number of top-knotch engineers that smoke marijuana regularly.
