Unemployment Goes Broke in Texas
KTEN.com ^ | 7/16/2009 | Deeda Payton

Bad news for the unemployed, Texas' unemployment fund will be empty by next week.

People who have been out of work for 59-weeks or more and are eligible for the additional 13 weeks of unemployment benefits are the only ones who will be affected.

That amounts to about 15-thousand people statewide. Those 15,000 in the extended benefits program will not get a check until the money comes back from the department of labor.

The Texas Workforce Commission's has already taken out interest-free loans from the Department of Labor to keep paying the regular unemployment insurance.

Bottom line, if you're one of the 822,000 Texans claiming unemployment, just hang in there.

I just want to clarify something. In your world, if someone wants to work, but can’t afford the gas to actually get to the job, they are a lazy SOB that is on the government dole? Are you listening to your own stupidity?

No, are you telling me seriously you can't afford the gas or you don't want to cut back on other things to afford it?

The difference between the welfare queens and my wife is that she is looking for work! She is actively trying to find work! The state says you have to apply to at least three jobs per week - she has not turned in less than eight applications/resumes a week! She is looking for any work that will PAY HER to do the job, not one that we have to pay THEM.

It is very amusing listening to you so called 'conservatives' on FR, try to justify being on the dole for over a year!

So, now effort is suppose to be the critera in life, not results?

That sounds like a liberal world-view to me.

And you didn't learn that in the USMC, that's for sure.

I doubt an idiot like you could have made it four years in the Marine Corps; at least not the one in which I enlisted and served for ten years!

Well, I did four years and it seems that I learned more in four years then you did in ten.

“No, are you telling me seriously you can’t afford the gas or you don’t want to cut back on other things to afford it?”

Let’s see, since you don’t know me and you have no idea what I have done to try to make ends meet, I will introduce myself! I sold my spare vehicle, we have had six yard sales (because we can only have one every other month in my subdivision), my cell phones have been discontinued, I dropped my internet access, I sold ALL my TVs (mother-in-law let us borrow one), my satellite TV has been discontinued, we stopped using the AC and BORROWED box fans to cut down on my bills, I had to stop paying for my daughter’s college (luckily our church picked up the cost), I dropped my personal life insurance (jeopardizing the future of my family in the event of something catastrophic), and I would disconnect my home phone (which is now a basic phone line), but that is the only access my wife has to job opportunities - so, tell me, should I start selling my children? You don’t know what all I (AND PROBABLY OVER HALF OF THE OTHERS THAT HAVE HAD THIS FOISTED UPON THEM) have gone through to keep the water and the electricity on - much less keep the roof over our heads!

“So, now effort is suppose to be the criteria in life, not results?”

So finally, after 160+ posts on this thread it comes out - you really are clueless about the current situation in America. Your statement above completely belays the reality that over 3 MILLION Americans have lost their jobs in the last twelve months. These people were not laid off for the fun of it - the jobs went AWAY! So, there are NO jobs from which to obtain your “results!” Once you get this reality, please come back and we will have a discussion.

If you served four years in the Marine Corps, thank you for your service, but your reality is NOT the one in which I and most of America are currently residing.

I guess, we will have to agree to disagree.

Are you still working?

Is all this happening because you wife lost her job?

No, no one is 'clueless', you just are making making excuses for not working for over a year.

There is work out there if you are willing to do it.

If you served four years in the Marine Corps, thank you for your service, but your reality is NOT the one in which I and most of America are currently residing.

This is 2009,not 1929, so stop with the whining about how bad things are for the unemployed.

The fact is that you can find work if you want it bad enough.

And to stay on 'unemployment' for over a year for a normal, healthy person is nonsense.

I guess, we will have to agree to disagree.

I guess we will.

Conservatives believe in self-reliance and hard work, not whining and feeling sorry for yourself.

If you had gone through a natural disaster, or personal illness your attitude would be understandable.

All that I can see what happened to you is that your wife lost her job and now you are in total poverty, and cannot even afford gas to go to work?

And you have a job?

You have your church paying for your daughters college!

Boy, you have NO shame!

“Are you still working?”

Yes, I am still working, but my company has cut my hours and I had to take a 12% cut in pay. My wife obviously just out and lost her job.

“You have your church paying for your daughters college!
Boy, you have NO shame!”

Surely you jest! Shame? Hell, this is how conservatives actually handle hard times - they have friends and family and they pull together to help one another! Our church is affiliated with the college that my daughter attends and they offered members who were having tough financial times to apply for a scholarship. I guess I should feel shame because I borrowed fans as well - right? You really are an idiot.

And what are you talking about “feeling sorry for yourself?” Where did you get that idea? I stated the facts about the situation (mine as well as many others)! You just don’t like the facts and want me to stop stating them.

I want you to stop trolling as a left-wing idiot, but I guess neither of us will get what we want.

I have friends that have waitressed and waited tables and did very good.

It seems that the majority of the job losses in Texas are in the Dallas - Fort Worth area. The business traveller and restaurnat hub - I am sure the restaurants there are feeling the pinch if business is hurting.

A scholarship isn't the same as the church paying for her education.

You didn't mention that she was going to get a scholarship.

And what are you talking about “feeling sorry for yourself?” Where did you get that idea? I stated the facts about the situation (mine as well as many others)! You just don’t like the facts and want me to stop stating them.

No, you didn't state the facts.

You didn't state that you had lost in addition to the lose of your wife's job and additional 12% of your income and that your daughter was attending the college associated with your church and applied for a hardship scholarship.

If you company has cut your hours, you either need to get another job or a part-time job.

As for the scholarship, that is different then just saying your church was helping pay her college tutition.

I want you to stop trolling as a left-wing idiot, but I guess neither of us will get what we want.

No, what you need to do is accept the reality of your situation, which began over a year ago and get off the dole.

It is 'left-wingers' who are always whining about their problems but never do anything about them.

You had a year to make adjustments and you CHOSE not to.

Well, I sure hate hearing that. My heart is with folks that make things work, waitresses are among the top since a dear Aunt waitressed her entire adult life. Of the old school, she had quite a “following” because of her efficiency, friendliness and “can do” spirit. She is now in a assisted living home. Her career was in the Rio Grande Valley where making a living was NOT easy, particularly in the service industry.

BTW, she always had a decent car and her own health insurance. I have no sympathy for the whiners with the “gimmee” attitude, she never took a dime’s worth of charity even during some very thin times...
