Do you have to be thin to be fit for the role of nation's Top Doc? ================== Since President Obama announced his pick for the nations Top Doc, Internet message boards have been atwitter with the observation that Dr. Regina Benjamin is fat.
Critics seem to believe its ironic that the nations top doctor would be overweight, and its led the most nattering of nags to conclude that she should not be picked for prom queen, er, I mean, surgeon general.
You would think the entire population of the blogosphere had suddenly reverted to the seventh grade.
I refuse to let fat be socially acceptable The President should have known better and picked a doctor who could kick start the debate on fat not perpetuate it, commented one reader on a national news site.
Another has some mighty specific requirements for the post: Rather than select a fat Black woman Obama should have chose a Black woman with a body mass index of 25 or less.

And it's a good thing that her bones are so big -- they've got a lot of weight to pack around.
The man appointed a known tax cheat as Secretary of the Treasury. So why should anybody be surprised when he appoints a fat beast to head the Public Health Service?
She has the most important qualification for an Obama nominee: She’s a pro-abortion Catholic.
>>In fact, if this Alabama physician can connect with fat Americans of all ethnic groups because of her own weight, she stands a very good chance of reaching them about the problem.<<
Uh, I don’t think so. Being fat shouldn’t disqualify this person from being surgeon general, but the writer’s statement is off base. If you’re overweight, seeing and being around fat people makes you feel like you’re fine the way you are. It’s seeing thin, fit people that spurs you to action. I was about 30 pounds overweight until I started working in an office where the two bosses are triathletes and one of my co-workers (probably inspired by the bosses) lost 140 pounds a few years back. Being around that bunch made me feel like a slob, and I’ve lost weight because of it.

That just slays me.....:)
Great personality, though...
I’ll say it again...
I and several members of my family have met Dr. Benjamin, and though we’re on opposite sides of the political spectrum — I respect her, her sacrifices and her work..
I disagree with her position on abortion - but there isn’t a SINGLE Republican politician I agree with 100%.
I believe this woman to be HONEST, INCORRUPTIBLE, DEDICATED to SERVICE with ACCOMPLISHMENTS that are undeniable. What you see is what you get.
She’s a DOER....she walks the walk.
Folks can function and get past being over ideal weight, but once stupid, they’re stuck. We’ve got far too many of those stupid bastards in office already.
I doubt whether anyone would be making an issue of it if the Surgeon General’s job in a Nanny State didn’t include adding new regulations against anything judged to make Americans fat.
Also, being pro-abortion is a serious problem, because she is in a position to pretend that killing babies is a basic aspect of “health care.” It wouldn’t matter so much in some posts, but it matters in this one.
Finally, I’m not even sure if it’s a good thing that she is someone who gets things done, if what she gets done is Obama-style health care. As Rush says, it might be better to wish that she fails.
Yeah, under 9 feet.
HEY...IT’S A THYROID PROBLEM!!!

But - given the character of most politicians today, especially those in Obama’s administration and in this Leftist controlled Congress — this lady would be a breath of fresh air as someone who has reached across race lines and actually ACCOMPLISHED works of personal service with groups of every ethnicity living in the areas she served...
For those who don't know - her clinic in Bayou La Batre, Alabama served far more whites and Asians - mostly Vietnamese - than any other ethnicity... Blacks probably never accounted to more that 10% of the population in this shrimp fishing port. If memory serves - she also built and ran a clinic to serve the poor in Mobile, AL.
As much as I disagree with her position on abortion - I have a feeling she would be a Surgeon General whose ability and accomplishments will be head and shoulders above those in recent memory....
