PEACE SYMBOL or a BROKEN UPSIDE-DOWN CROSS: Like many simple symbols, it meant different things at different times. Some call it Nero's cross, linking it to the notorious Roman emperor who persecuted Christians. Centuries later, it was recognized as an old Norse Rune. After WW2 (1939-1945), it was found on the tombstones of some of Hitler's SS troops and labeled 'The Dead Man Rune.' Revived in the sixties by hippies and others who protested nuclear weapons, Western culture, and Christian values, it became a worldwide symbol of a new age of global peace and earth-centered unity. But many heavy metal rock fans would agree with Nero and have used it to mock Christ and His followers.
The above was taken from Symbols and Their Meaning. On a personal level, it stands to me to symbolize the hatred and animosity expressed toward both our military in the 60s and toward our country. It is a symbol expressing hatred of the US rather than pride in the greatest country on earth.
Ditto's to that. Basically I suppose there's nothing constitutionally wrong with wearing it but by the same token I have the constitutional right to not like it.
Just like this picture that FReeper rightwingintelligentsia took of a house near where we live.
Admittedly we don't know the homeowner's intention or the statement that is being made. It could be a protest against the current administration or a show of support.
However I am still offended. Then again I know of a lot of my neighbors who don't like my Gadsden.

It’s semaphore for ND. Nuclear Disarmament.
Thank you for posting this. That’s exactly what it stands for.
“I was there”, when this whole thing was promoted in the 60’s!
Not good....not good....now it’s used as a fashion item!!!!
On pink tees with sparkles no less!
I could jump up and down screaming at this!!!
I think it should have been directed to poster #7....ciwwaf! as well.
I grew up in the 60s and saw the peace sign as a frivolous pop symbol, not unlike the smiley face.
But to your point, when the daughter of a 60s radical is dressed as such, and her parents knowing full well that her photograph would be seen 'round the world, one can't help but realize that this was as much a signal being sent as anything.
Someone has to explain to me why Palin's daughter, kept out of the limelight is fair game for jokes about rape, but Obama's daughter, trotted out dressed in a political symbol, is somehow immune.
The thing about tyranny is that recognition grows like a cancer: more and more see it and realize that they, too, have a boot on their neck, and the grip of power (and legitimacy) loosens.
Well Mama Michelle said she never felt pride in her country. I think there is an old German proverb that illustrates this.

Thank you!
That's exactly what I remember from the '60s and have expressed it in my replies. Thanks again.
