Earlier (last evening) I suggested that Freepers didn't make any racially insensitive or racist comments, and besides the original thread wasn't available having been pulled. Turns out "newbies", most likely this Canadian pervert operating under various IDs, did that, but even then they weren't "racist" in the sense of American language usage ~ maybe they were racist in Oz, or Canuckistan, but not here.

I would strongly suggest that FR's administrators responded faster than normal, and at the same time the "racist" content was of such an alien nature it wasn't instantly apparant to anyone that anything had happened ~ except for a supposed comment about a kid being a "whore".

So, saquin, you say you saw it ~ was the word "whore" used, or was it a response to the exceedingly obnoxious and offensive gang signs the President forced his daughter to wear (her mother dressed to the 9s and the kid dressed in what seem to be surplus clothing from the Italian equivalent of Salvation Army retail).

Was the "word" there or did you impute its existence?

That being said, I will offer that for me the dust up over this specific thread is a tipping point for the board as a whole. There is a continued degeneration of post quality here with more and more of our posts being one-liners in which Freepers fall over each other to be first on any thread to crack wise.

There is the matter of the profanity and vulgarity that supposedly shocks us when we see it on the leftist sites; but more and more of it is allowed here.

To the issue of racism: I will attest that my experience (and I am on here a LOT) is that overt racism is promptly dealt with and I do not mind revealing that I have hit the RA button more than once when racist drivel is posted. I have never seen a post that I reported be left up. We do a good job policing ourselves and helping the mods.

Where it gets dicey is some folks attempts at wit and ironic comment. What someone thinks they are communicating can send an unintended message through unskillful use of the language.

Today's trolls do what they can to reinforce ugly sterotypes of conservatives. And like you, I believe they double team us... Maybe Jim could have us "sign" an agreement that we are in fact conservative - and he can outline what that means. And if someone's not conservative, they will have to explain to him why they want to post here. The statement will also have a clause stating that if the person's intent is to work against FreeRepublic and it's owners, that person can be sued... We need to start playing hardball with these people who are out to destroy something quite unique and wonderful...
