Plans for a new coal-fired power plant in central Utah were canceled after the city of Los Angeles -- the plant's biggest power purchaser -- signaled its intention to be "coal free" by 2020.
The Intermountain Power Agency -- a political subdivision of the state of Utah co-owned by municipal and rural electric cooperatives -- has dropped plans to build a proposed third 900-megawatt coal-fired generating unit at the Intermountain Power Plant near Delta, Utah.
"The project has been abandoned," IPA spokesman John Ward said yesterday.
The decision came after Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa announced last week that the city -- which purchases about 45 percent of the IPA's power -- wants to end its use of coal-fired power by 2020. Villaraigosa said that the city will replace its coal-fired electricity with energy from renewable sources, natural gas, nuclear and hydroelectric power.
"We were in a permitting and preliminary planning stage, and some of the expected partners determined that it wasn't going to match up with their resource objectives," Ward said.
Environmentalists praised the decision and said they expect similar projects to follow suit.

I hope they end up sitting in the dark.
They’re still mad at Utah over that Prop 8 thing....
Here’s my take: each state must be self-sufficient in power generation to hook up to the regional grid. If not, disconnect and let them mull the situation over for a while.

Good work Mayor Villaraigosa.
This is going to drive their economy farther into the ditch by raising energy prices. How long until California reaches the breaking point?
Cal. doesn’t want nuke power plants or more dams so that leaves natural gas. That $300/mo. electric bill is going to go up a bit, say to the sky.
unrealistic goals....
L.A.’S “civil servants” have become the enemy of the citizenry.
I think this is a case of politicians doing all the talking and none of the listening; but then, many of our problems could be described that way.
Set by unrealistic people.
They won't. They will contact T. Boone Pickens because he as 700 windmills just sitting around and they can put them on the beaches where there is a nice sea breeze to run them.
“We will not continue to contribute to the problem of global warming,” said Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. “As with the Obama administration’s energy plan, we intend to move forward with alternative energy sources, including hope, change, and unicorn farts.”
Are you sure - I thought he dropped that idea when oil prices run back.
Anyway LA may be sitting in the dark, but they will also be sitting in the heat. Then they will be cross. Then they will riot. Then.......
My understanding is he had placed the order and was receiving the windmills when he found out he had no transmission lines from his site to the distribution lines into the major cities. He found out it was going to cost too much, be almost impossible to get the easements and the permits, and take to long to construct the lines so he is abandoning his major project. He is trying to find smaller areas where they might be able to install them but so far no luck.
10 million illegal aliens sweltering in the heat.
Not gonna happen, but I like it. A lot.
Same thing with state budgets. Self sufficient, no more nursing on the teat of the federal government (meaning the rest of us).
Start a candle business there, it wll work out well.
