NEA General Counsel Complains of Attacks from "Right-Wing Bastards"

SAN DIEGO, California, July 9, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The general counsel for the National Education Association (NEA), America's largest teacher's union, complained last week of the "conservative and right-wing bastards" that are "after" the NEA. At the same meeting, the NEA rejected a proposal that would have ceased their abortion advocacy, and went on record in support of same-sex "marriage."

"We are not paranoid, someone really is after us," said General Counsel Bob Chanin in an address to NEA affiliates on the occasion of his retirement.

"Why are these conservative and right-wing bastards picking on NEA and its affiliates? I will tell you why: it is the price we pay for success. NEA and its affiliates have been singled out because they are the most effective unions in the U.S."

Chanin also noted that, in his opinion, NEA's advocacy is "effective" "not because of our creative ideas, it is not because of the merit of our positions, it is not because we care about children, and it is not because we have a vision of a great public school for every child. NEA and its affiliates are effective advocates because we have power.

"And we have power because there are more than 3.2 million people who are willing to pay us hundreds of millions of dollars in dues each year because they believe that we are the union that can most effectively represent them."

Although the Obama administration is more friendly to the left-leaning NEA than the Bush administration was, lamented Chanin, "attacks by conservatives and right-wing troops will continue."

According to a Baptist Press (BP) report, NEA delegates at the July 1-6 meeting voted 69-31 to reject an amendment stating the union had "no position" on abortion, which would have invalidated a resolution professing the group's support for "family planning, including the right to reproductive freedom." While the NEA technically holds a "neutral" position on abortion, this amounts to promoting a women's ability to choose, an NEA member told BP.

Despite protests that the group's involvement in same-sex "marriage" was causing a loss in membership, delegates at the meeting adopted an action plan strengthening the NEA's support of homosexuality with a vow to support same-sex "marriage" or civil union legislation.

Specifically, the resolution stated the group would support the enactment of same-sex "marriage" laws, and fight both state and federal constitutional or statutory provisions defining marriage as between a man and a woman.

Hey Bob Chanin, here's a clue. Some of those "conservative and right-wing bastards" are IN your stinking union.

Our youngest daughter is in your NEA. ha-ha-ha

She has a BSEd, not a socialist BAEd.

Actually, he attacked a number of groups by name. In the middle part of the speech was a detailed listing of NEA’s foes over the years, specifically the Landmark Legal Foundation, the National Right to Work Committee, Fox News, the Wall Street Journal and Forbes, along with the Bush Administration labor and education departments and, Chanin asserted, the IRS.

and tenure needs to be erased for good.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Tenure is merely a symptom of the underlying disease.

The disease is socialism. Government K-12 schools were a socialist scheme from the beginning! The goal of the government schools from the very beginning was to turn our compliant workers for the fascist state.

The solution is not just to get rid of tenure. We must abolish government K-12 schooling!

Effective at protecting incompetent teachers, effective in nailing down huge salaries and benefits, effective at promoting liberal policies and a socialist agenda...

absolutely sucky when it comes to educating children.

Damn right we’re after them.

Regretably, he’s right .. the NEA has been successful. Too successful. Since their rise to power and influence, public education in the USA has become pathetic.

I have spokeen with several teachers who belong to NEA solely because of malpractice insurance which they have to have in today’s environment but which rates are prohibitive unless purchased through the union.

Does anyone else wonder why it’s called an “Association” when it is, in fact, a “Union?” It’s a form of deception and dishonesty to present themselves as one type entity when they are quite another.

These teacher’s union goons steal money from me and every other productive person who owns a home, every December when I get my property tax bill.

Most of them are now on a 3 month vacation on the taxpayer’s dime.

One teacher’s union leech admitted to her high pay and low workload, my sister in law, who told her mother (who told me)”I can’t believe how much they pay me for what I do.”

That’s the truth that no teacher’s union employee says in public. That was back when she was a vice principal. Now she is a principal. More like a queen living high off the taxpayer.

"We are not paranoid, someone really is after us," said General Counsel Bob Chanin...

Yes, we are.

The NEA is one of the Principal Causes of the ongoing destruction of this country. We try to eliminate such.

The sad thing is that I genuinely believe that most teachers enter the profession to provide a quality education to children; however, they are almost immediately derailed and forced to comply with the left’s agenda.

Forgive me in advance, but the simple answer is, we right wing bastards are forced to submit our kids and grand kids to those left wing sons of bitches for indoctrination.

I bet that if there was no abortion, there’d be a lot more jobs for teachers. The NEA is actually backstabbing their own constituency.

In the case of my sister in law, she was raised by parents who knew that a state job was a golden ticket, and the higher up you go the better. Her father was the president of a high profile state union here until his retirement at an early age. She was not a teacher very long, as that is not where the big bucks were waiting. She got to be a vice principal and then principal very quickly. She never wanted to teach kids. She is so stuck up we can’t stand her anymore. The money has changed her and she flaunts it so boorishly.

How my husband escaped that home as a conservative is a miracle. He does kid me once in a while, like telling me he voted for Obama...I say if he goes all liberal on me I am changing the locks on the doors and he can sleep in the barn.

I know some very dedicated and good hearted public school teachers. I recently found out that one is even a conservative, as she offered a funny comment about Joe Biden. I was pleased that she is not the usual union teacher. Another teacher I got to know, has had to find other work in the last year and tells me there are too many teachers here. She is a nice person and would be a great teacher.

Every time loving parents make the decision to homeschool their children, these NEA scumbags lose a little bit of the “power” they lust for.

I’m really after them—and I’m a member. I wish the conservatives had more voice, but isn’t it lovely that they take my money oh so willingly, but then call me names.

NEA General Counsel Bob Chanin is a crowd favorite at the RA for his ability to explain complex legal issues clearly and authoritatively. Here, he reacts after the New Jersey Education Association presented him the official "Bob Chanin Caucus" T-shirt (the back of the shirt, pictured behind Chanin, reads: "Show your amicus briefs") on stage at the 2008 NEA Representative Assembly at Walter E. Washington Convention Center, Washington D.C. July 4, 2008

Chanin, who retires after this RA following more than 40 years of service to the NEA

I would be ashamed to admit it!

NEA’s Top Attorney, Bob Chanin, Says NEA’s First Goal Is To Advance And Protect Teacher Rights

formal acknowledgment of NEA’s place in the organized-labor movement

Chanin pointed out that the NEA used collective bargaining and strikes to more effectively represent education employees.

“NEA and affiliates must never lose sight of the fact that they are unions, and unions first and foremost represent their members,” Chanin said.

“It is not because of creative ideas, it is not because of the merit of our position, it is not because we care about children, it is not because we have a vision of a great public school for every child. NEA and its affiliates are effective advocates because we have power and we have power because there are more than 3.2 million people who are willing to pay us hundreds of millions of dollars in dues each year because they believe we are the unions that can most effectively represent them, the unions that can protect their rights and advance their interests as education employees.” (standing ovation)

Chanin said, “Why are conservative and right wing bastards picking on NEA and its affiliates? It is the price we pay for success. NEA and its affiliates have been singled out because they are the most effective unions in the United States and they are the nation’s leading advocates for public education and for the type of liberal social and economic agenda and social agenda that these (conservative) groups find unacceptable. NEA will continue to be attacked as long as we continue to be effective advocates for public education for education employees and for human and civil rights. ..”
