He doesn’t. Where does he call for more bureaucracy? Nowhere.

And then you proceed to admit in your next sentences that a 'downside' to his proposal (for a NEW, ARMED super- authority to 'manage' the economy - God save us, please) may be more bureaucracy, which is why he stresses the need for subsidiarity. So, as you correctly point out, why stress the need for susidiarity to mitigate something that there will not be more of?

Since he is proposing something that he knows will create more bureaucracy then it is fair to say that he wants more bureaucracy, or at the very least is willing to tolerate more bureaucracy. It is as simple as that. Logically speaking, more bureacracy > the amount of present bureaucracy, or less bureaucracy. Therefore the Pope wants more bureaucracy, regardless of whether he is merely willing to tolerate it or thinks it a necessary 'downside' or not.

And if it is not really more bureaucracy that wants, then who or what is going to do all that "managing" of the global enconomy in the NEW, ARMED super- authority that be using physical coercion to render us all "charitable" by the forced redistribution of our wealth?

Cordially,

Boy I tell ya, the whole idea of a global authority with the power to enforce it’s will sends shivers down my spine. I’m surprised anybody at FR would defend the idea.

If the pope is not naive and understand the 'pitfalls' of bureaucracy, why then does he want more of it?

Diamond,
Therein lies the rub of the whole thing. The most important thing that we can ascertain in this thread is the pope's motive. Understandably, the Catholics in this thread have primarily assumed purity of motive and are assuming that the pope is either:
a) Misunderstood
b) Misguided, or
c) Misinformed

Now, many of the non-Catholics in this thread think that the passage in question is too concrete for option A and too smart for option B.

Now, I'm sure you'll agree that the important thing, above all else, is the truth.

The only difference is that the non-Catholics have offered up a fourth terrible option.

At this time, I tend to believe that the pope is too close to the situation to be able to see clearly and that it is a combination of B and C. If that is true, then the pope is being kept in a bubble and is effectively captured. I do not wish to think about option D, but, unfortunately, the ultimate effect could be the same.

In any case, we will know in good time. Until then, watch carefully all that comes from Rome. Also, for the record, I watch the clergy in my own church with great care as well.

Socialism and Marxism are products of 18th and 19th century Calvinism distorted with supposedly “modern scientific” views,

Just a slight historical correction. Sir Thomas More, a Catholic and "saint", was the author of Utopia which deals the idea that the world would be best ruled by a few rather than the masses. This philosophy wasn't anything new in the Church for the Holy Roman Church which sought to expand itself. He only vocalized it and Utopia planted the seeds for socialism. The whole philosophy behind the "infallibility of the Pope" doctrine, devised in the early 20th century was to consolidate decisions and authority with one man. And one could go on and on.

Compare this to Protestantism that preaches every man is their own priest and individualism; and I think it's a bit of a stretch to claim that Protestantism is Marxist. It seems to me the evidence is the other way around. That is unless, of course, Marxism and Socialism have been redefined.

Please note that what the Pope is preaching IS Socialist in nature. You will not find a Calvinist on this board (or I would gather in the world) that would agree with the Pope on this.

You wrote:

“...why is the burden of proof suddenly on others to somehow have the acumen to specify what that framework would be in anything approaching concrete terms?”

Because they brought it up. The pope was talking about many issues. The anti-Catholics here focused on one - and twisted it as they did so.
