Got a viable substitute for Reagan?
There will never be another Reagan, much the same way there will never be another Oscar Robertson or Michael Jordan. But, that doesn't mean we have to settle for the first promising rookie point guard that comes along.
Palin was well positioned to be the one to inherit Reagan's mantle. The first legitimate contender in two decades. But, that was presuming (like I did) that she, like Reagan, would work in earnest to build her bona fides and CV. Quitting after 30 months in office is not building your bona fides.
Like so many today, she seems impetuous, impatient and perhaps even entitled. Just because the Democrats participate in idol worship, doesn't mean that we should. As others have pointed out, the bedrock of conservatism is meritocracy. No one who's only held state wide office, especially with no federal government experience, or business success, should be a conservative candidate for President.
We got very lucky when Reagan ended up being the Republican nominee. At that point in time we were looking for anyone but Jimmy Carter. We could have ended up with someone (shudder) even worse, or not much better with a New World Order idea and no image to put us in a good spot.
Isn’t that the problem though, the endless measuring up and comparisons? It is like a sports team that sees a cherished player retire, and the fans boo every misstep of his successors if they don’t do something the first guy woulda done easily.
Ted Williams retired 50 years ago, and every left-fielder since...Yaz, Rice, Greenwell, Ramierz...has been found to be lacking in one way or another.
I’d rather see a politician looking forward and building his, or her, own foundations.
Sarah’s still is the biggest attraction in the Republican Party. She can still draw tens of thousands to hear her speak. I can’t think of anybody in the party with that kind of star appeal.
[Got a viable substitute for Reagan?]
We will shortly be in the midst of a full blown depression. To save ourselves from total destitution, a revolution will be needed else we will be herded over a cliff like lemmings.
I along with every other armchair quarterback can list all of Sarah Palins limitations. But when the revolution comes, Palin is the only one positioned to lead.
Unless someone figures out a way to dig up Reagan, I’m falling in with Palin’s army. It may not be the most politically correct, but by gum it is the only option out there that is headed in the right direction.
While Palin proved she can dish out the red meat in her speeches, I'm keeping an eye on Rep. Michelle Bachmann actions.
