WASHINGTON -- Insurgents captured an American soldier in eastern Afghanistan, according to a U.S. military spokeswoman.
Capt. Elizabeth Mathias said the soldier has been missing since Tuesday and that the military was using "all our resources to find him and provide for his safe return."
The soldier wasn't taking part in the major military operation launched in the southern Taliban stronghold of the Helmand River Valley. The new operation is an early test of the Obama administration's new strategy for beating back the resurgent Taliban and stabilizing the country in advance of this summer's presidential elections.
Operation Khanjar, or "strike of the sword," began shortly after 1 a.m. local time when close to 4,000 Marines, backed by about 700 Afghan security personnel, moved by air and ground into villages in Helmand, a major opium-producing region.

U.S. Marines took part in an operation Thursday to take areas in the Southern Helmand Province
that Taliban fighters are using as a resupply route.
Prayers up for this soldier.
I wonder if our guys are chipped up with RFIDs yet? That’d make finding one a lot easier.
Would that be Army? NG? 33rd BCT?
“4,000 Marines”
Fox has corrected that to 1000.
Prayers for our Troops.
Amen.
If this kid comes back with so much as a scratch , I will remind this pos in the white house what we are dealing with.
He is most likely already dead.
I think if I faced capture by those with dull swords who would wish to cut my head off or burn me & hang me from a bridge types. Well, I'd try to off myself before they did. Pass the cyandide pills, please.
Prayers for this soldier & his family.
Some reports on radio are saying he walked off a base into an unsecured area. Defector??????
I doubt it.
Happens all the time. Some folks just shouldn’t be in the Military.
They also mentioned a 25K reward for information on his location. I thought that was an unusual announcement.
They would have to kill me to capture me because I would fight tooth and nail to resist capture. A quick death is much preferable to the torture that they would undoubtedly perform. I am sure that their idea of torture is far different from the libtards’ idea of it.
If that is true, he either had a death wish, may have been trying to buy drugs, or was a traitor. Have they given his name?
Nothing in my post or the comments that weren't open source.
FR needs to be careful about censoring opinion and open source reports.....happy 4th of July mods, remember that freedom thing?
I haven't heard his name. I think it is strange that the military would mention that he left of his own accord and that there was a reward, especially while this soldier is in harm's way. That doesn't sound like the way the Pentagon has handled this in the past.
If the guy just took off, how would they know he is kidnapped?
The whole thing stinks like Obama to me.
Perhaps he is mentally ill or drug seeking or maybe we are being told lies. He is still an American and I hope he is okay and the rest can be sorted out later.
No facts now. Just an ever changing story about the soldier’s disappearance.
No - if like a few other cases in Iraq, Kosovo and Korea of which I am aware, the GI slipped out to meet a girl - sometimes a setup, sometimes not.
Thanks, I had no idea. All I'm seeing are clips of MJs last video.
