As a twenty-eight year veteran I can say this is absolutely true, and many many citizens who, now in this era, have never had contact with the military cannot understand what you are saying.
The Soviet Union had a massive military, generals, missiles, tanks, submarines, etc, etc, so how can anyone project that a "military" cannot be oriented and controlled by a centralized Party?
Generals do not necessarily have any finer values than any other national citizens who fall into the line of the "Party". Witness currently, Sestak (Admiral), Clinton's guy in Bosnia, even John McCain.
The point is, and has always been, each and every one of us, and our neighbors, better know what freedom and its responsibilities are, for every one of us is on the frontlines.
My 29-yrs with the military disagree with your assessment, profoundly disagrees.
