House Democrats win key test vote on climate bill

WASHINGTON – House Democrats have narrowly won an important test vote on legislation to combat global warming and usher in a new era of cleaner energy.

The vote on Friday was 217-205 to advance the White House-backed legislation to the full House. Thirty Democrats defected.

Republicans say the bill includes the largest tax increase in history.

The legislation would impose limits, for the first time, on carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas pollution from power plants, factories and refineries. It would force a shift away from coal and other fossil fuels to renewable and more efficient forms of energy.

Supporters and opponents agreed the result would be higher energy costs, but disagreed widely on the impact on consumers.

They voted on the procedure and debate rules for the bill, and we can see they are still at least 1 vote short.

I thought 218 was the magic number? Why is 217 OK for this vote - just a simple majority? Do you know?

I called my congressman yesterday and told the lady who was taking messages that I was going to do everything I could to fire him if he voted yes and he works for me, not the other way around.

“The vote on Friday was 217-205 to advance the White House-backed legislation to the full House. Thirty Democrats defected. “

217+205= 422

If I understand correctly there are 435 members of congress. That means 13 people didn’t vote.

Who are the 13?
