Lights Out (Dems will be punished for Waxman-Markey)
American Spectator ^ | June 25, 2009 | W. James Antle, III

Posted on 06/25/2009 4:49:47 AM PDT by reaganaut1

Tomorrow House Speaker Nancy Pelosi plans to bring the Waxman-Markey cap-and-trade emissions bill to the floor for a vote. It will be the biggest political risk of her speakership and the first broad-based tax increase of the Obama years.

Already President Obama and the Democratic Congress have raised taxes on smokers, boosting the cigarette tax. But a tax increase that affects just a fifth of the electorate is unlikely to lead to a second Boston Tea Party. The Obama budget blueprint anticipates a return to Clinton-era marginal tax rates on upper-income earners, but that can easily be justified as a tax hike borne by the wealthy who failed to pay their "fair share" while the Republicans were in office.

Cap and trade will hit the wallets of many Americans who are firmly middle-class and fancy themselves admirers of Hope and Change. That's why Republicans, even after unveiling their own energy alternative this month, have kept up the rhetorical assault against the Democrats' "national energy tax."

In every conference call and press conference on energy policy since the start of the year, House Republicans have pilloried "cap and tax." The National Republican Congressional Committee sent out a fundraising letter on Tuesday containing the following broadside: "Cap-and-trade is nothing more than a tax which starts accruing the moment you flip on your light switch. This 'light switch tax' will raise energy costs by hundreds of dollars for the average family and between 1.8 and 7 million American jobs could be lost."

Bill Clinton's honeymoon came to a close when he shelved his middle-class tax cut and proposes tax increases that didn't just fall on the top 1.5 percent. Southern and industrial state Democrats stripped his budget of the most egregious tax increases [...] but the damage was done.

I can't believe that members of Congress would pass this bill and then have to go back to their districts and explain to constituents why raising their electric rates 50% is a good thing.

The largest tax Scam in history. All based on no scientific fact. If it were a scientific fact, it would be presented as such, it is a hypothesis with many holes.

Exactly. They used to come right out and raise income taxes. Now they are using stealth taxes to take more money from us to distribute to their voters, not as cash, but as incentives to vote for the rats. And the press cheers on.

Great article feedback post - TAB

There is the Global Warming Petition Project (see Internet) where 31,478 US independent scientists declared that there is no anthropogenic (human-caused) global warming; of these 9,029 are scientists with PhD degrees. Our environmentalists tried to sabotage this effort by submitting phony names with phony degrees - and then claimed the whole effort by the Petition scientists was a fraud. It took us 3 years and a lot of private money to verify the credentials of all the signatories and clean up the Petition of those saboteurs. See also Manhattan Declaration with more such signatories, plus a large number of scientific groups from other countries who state the same. I am one of these signatories, MS and PhD degrees from UCLA, with majors in thermodynamics and heat & mass transfer. I think to fight this communist attempt to secure a world government should not be fought on the narrow grounds of more taxes - that is the losing proposition; where about 50% of the population is on some kind of welfare or dole we will always be outvoted. The battle should be fought and won on the firm scientific basis. Here the ecologists are attacking the first principle of life on earth: all living beings breathe oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide; all vegetation breathes carbon dioxide and exhales oxygen. This gigantic hoax is attacking the #1 principle of life on earth. Environmentalism is the cult of death.

Sorry, writer, but the despicable Bill Clinton still won re-election. Worse, many today will claim the HE gets the credit for ending the deficit spending that occurred in the 1990s.

It is all about collecting more taxes. Even better it is a tax with a public face - saving the planet.

It has nothing to do with global “warming”. Long term the earth has been warming since the last ice age. Short term we had an unusually active sun in the 80’s and 90’s warming the earth at a faster rate than the overall trend. Now the sun is unusually inactive and the earth has been cooling for at least the last 10 years now.

More taxes, more power over people. And the more goodies they can distribute to their patrons.

When people are in an uproar over higher energy prices 0 and his ilk will just blame the greedy power companies so he and the Dems will probably suffer no ill effect. Or somehow they will blame Bush and plenty of dolts out there will accept that.

This global warming SCAM and FRAUD is a massive hijacking of OUR money to further empower politicians, sleazy politicians like Pelosi.

The Cap and Tax Economic Suicide Pact (The TAXman-Malarkey bill) is a economy and job killer, just at a time when we need a better economy and more jobs. Don’t believe the slick lies that they tell you about “green jobs,” either.

In the past, I'd agree that “Democrats will be punished”. But no longer. The zombies Obama voters will buy want ever story the DNC/DBM runs to blame the rising cost of everything. Expect the usual suspects to get bashed.

My theory is that soon after the taxes pass, the story line will shift and the media will begin reporting that “global warming has slowed” and credit the Dems. And use that to justify keeping the tax, if not expanding it.

Just raising income taxes would be too honest. That’s the genius of this hoax: The tax increase is not to raise revenue, it’s to save the planet.
