The lt gov is a republican and says he was out of the loop. As were Sanford’s wife and four children. Weird.

Is this story somehow significant? Iran is repressing its people, North Korea is shooting off missiles, we’re about to get a cap-and-trade bill that’s going to increase energy costs for many of us, and we’re writing about where Sanford went?

well hold the man accountable for giving his enemies the ammo to use against him! he is responsible for how he is perceived, no one else!

He’s a strong conservative southern governor. Fought against taking the stimulus money. He’s been on the “to watch” list, which is why this is a story.

As a contrast, we in Virginia never know where our Governor is now that he’s chair of the DNC. And we really don’t care, as long as we’re not paying for it.

Gov. Sanford isn't presidential material if he needs to run and hide following a difficult legislative session.

Holding important political office means one cannot still act the frat boy.

Sanford has just destroyed any hope of advancing his political career.

On the subject of Bauer, and with a big FWIW...

Morning Fix: Sorting out Sanford

Given that Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer has alleged that Sanford's staff misled him about the governor's whereabouts....

how about holding accountable the politician that permitted the events to be used against him. fair or not,

That sounds like blaming the victim for being the victim.

Unfortunately Sanford was foolish enough to step into this honey trap. He could have set the stage for this a lot better than he did.

It was poor judgment plain and simple to leave your post of Governor the way he did.

If he needed time off he could have done just that and put the LT Governor in charge while he took a few days - that would have been protocol, etc.

I had high hopes for people like Sanford, etc...but it looks like at the end of the day Palin is the only Republican governor worth her salt but of course Alaska is still taking stimulus money.

Face it crowd the GOP is worthless and it is time for a true Conservative and Constitutional party to rise from the ashes, take power and finally restore our great Republic to what it should be.

Why don’t you wait until all your ifs are answered before you look down your nose at someone and pass judgement.

I'm just saying that we should ask the questions, not give the guy a pass because he's got an R after his name.

"...Maybe he did go to some Bilderburger meeting..."

I may be proven wrong, but as a constituent of Gov. Sanford, and an unabashed admirer of his political style, I say it's more likely he's been holed up somewhere with a group of like-minded American Patriots, crafting a set of "21st Century Federalist Papers", figuring out how we can turn President "Present" out of the White House before we all end up in the crapper.

I'd certainly believe that before I'd believe Chris(tina) Matthews projecting his personal fantasies about traipsing through the forest naked.

He has opponents in SC, even on his side of the aisle, who didn't like him upsetting their personal little apple carts, who love to deride him at the drop of a hat for challenging SC political orthodoxy.

But he's by far the best Governor in this country right now (OK, maybe maybe tied for 1st w/Palin).

Until proven otherwise, my experience with the man leads me to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Not like this, no.

When a responsible state official (the highest official in the state) takes a vacation, they issue a press release. For the taxpaying public. In it, it indicates that they will be away, a duration of time, and a the proper chain of authority in his absence. It also mentions whether family is going or not.

What he did, essentially, is tie a knapsack to a long stick (like they did in the Little Rascals!) and run away from home....bug out.

That might be okay for you and me, when we are fed up. But it is reprehensible conduct for a governor. And whether conservative or liberal, I refuse to make excuses for it.

Because there are NO excuses for his conduct.

Re: "I wanted to do something exotic," Sanford told The State..."

hahahahahahahaha

That doesn't mean, by a long shot, that he was doing a "McGreevey". In any case, this story cannot possibly have a rational explanation. I didn't realize at first that he was gone for 4 or 5 full days.

Sanford said he decided not to return via the Columbia airport to avoid the media.

That doesn't look good either.

objective fact: he was absent from his family over fathers day weekend, in parts unknown. without a good excuse like being with a dying relative, that alone right there is enough to make me question his judgment. i have 3 kids, no way on God’s green earth would my husband be away from them over Father’s day without a damn good excuse. Cruising to Argentina/hiking with or without clothes on the appalachian trail/needing to decompress would not qualify as a damn good excuse.

Because power corrupts, society's demands for moral authority and character increase as the importance of the position increases.

John Adams

If we'd elect people with integrity, we wouldn't have these problems.
