Sarkozy says burqas are 'not welcome' in France

President Nicolas Sarkozy lashed out Monday at the practice of wearing the Muslim burqa, insisting the full-body religious gown is a sign of the "debasement" of women and that it won't be welcome in France. The French leader expressed support for a recent call by dozens of legislators to create a parliamentary commission to study a small but growing trend of wearing the full-body garment in France

In the first presidential address in 136 years to a joint session of France's two houses of parliament, Sarkozy laid out his support for a ban even before the panel has been approved—braving critics who fear the issue is a marginal one and could stigmatize Muslims in France.

"In our country, we cannot accept that women be prisoners behind a screen, cut off from all social life, deprived of all identity," Sarkozy said to extended applause in a speech at the Chateau of Versailles southwest of Paris.

"The burqa is not a religious sign, it's a sign of subservience, a sign of debasement—I want to say it solemnly," he said. "It will not be welcome on the territory of the French Republic."

A government spokesman said Friday that it would seek to set up a parliamentary commission that could propose legislation aimed at barring Muslim women from wearing the head-to-toe gowns outside the home.

The issue is highly divisive even within the government. France's junior minister for human rights, Rama Yade, said she was open to a ban if it is aimed at protecting women forced to wear the burqa.

But Immigration Minister Eric Besson said a ban would only "create tensions."

A leading French Muslim group warned against studying the burqa.

*** FRENCH POLITICS AND CULTURE PING LIST *** FREEPMAIL ME IF YOU WANT TO JOIN ***

*** WE WILL ALSO BE COVERING EVENTS IN IRAN AS THEY UNFOLD FREEPMAIL ME TO SIGN UP ***

Sarko delivered the equivalent of our State of the Union address, speaking before a joint session on the Senat and the Assemblee Narionale. This is the first time in more than a hundred years that a President of France has done this. The Left screamed “Monarchist! Napoleon!”, Sarko got his point across, and everyone watched the speech.

We will report back on the poll numbers. So far, there is overwhelming support for the Democracy movement in Iran, and even more support for banning the Burqua.

The Communists, Green and Eco-freaks boycotted and refused to attend.

The PS Spcialist Party attended, but left and refused to participate in the debate that followed the speech.

It takes guts to finally draw a line in the shifting sands. Good for him. Now if we could just get rid of the turbans in the RCMP.

Sarko will capitulate.
He talks big as always, but, will sit down with the islamic thugs at the Paris Mosque, after we watched the suburb of Paris, Lyon, Marseilles burning. and tell everyone he did not mean it, His comments were taken out of context.
Hard to believe but France takes its orders from the muslim thugs, France likes to pretend it still has a say in the world, sadly, their cowardice is showing.

it is too little too late for much of Europe. They are already inside the gates, breeding like rabbits and spreading the ideology while native Europeans are not breeding and offering nothing to what youth do have they but nihilism and six weeks vacation.

“it is too little too late for much of Europe.”

...sadly, all the reports I read seem to say the same thing...there are more mosques than churches in France...I keep waiting for western Christendom to take a stand...but I just don’t see it....in this country I knew things were going the wrong way 20 years ago when the Presbyterian Hymnal was revised and “Onward Christian Soldiers” was removed.

This has actually been a long time coming. This didn't start with President Sarkozy. Remember President Chirac supported a ban on the hijab in schools.
Mark Steyn was right in his book "The End of the World as We Know It"

France has a problem with a large immigrant population that doesn't see itself as "French" and never assimilated to the French culture. They have been stuck in the ghettos of France with little to no opportunity and no attention paid to them.

Action such as suppressing their religious expression is only going to create a deeper bond of resentment that will eventually boil to the surface...and it will be UGLY.

I worked with a guy from the Middle East and he came to America via France. He was telling me the difference in US vs France is that in France, you arrive with nothing and 5 years later you still have nothing. There are no opportunities for advancement. In America, you arrive with nothing and in 5 years, you can have a nice home, good paying job, and nice schools for your kids. He said there is more opportunity in America and less resentment towards Muslims in the US....just one guys opinion.

Sarkozy is right. Women are being forced to wear these middle ages costumes by their own people to keep them oppressed and in line. I was in Iran during the Iranian Revolution. Overnight, women were forced to wear the chador and keep their hair covered. Assimilation will not be possible given thes strictures masquerading as "religious expression." Hell, Muslim honor killings are still going on in in Europe now.

In Turkey, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk modernized Turkey including banning the waering of the fez by government employees and promoting the wearing of Western dress by women and the elimination of the veil. He also banned polagamy. The objective was to separate religion from government. For the first time in Turkey's history, Islamic law was clearly separated from the secular law of the nation and confined to its religious domain.

There are forces today in Turkey that are trying to reverse those changes in the name of Islamic fundamentalism. Women are being harrassed and attacked if they don't comply. This is a case of "religious expression" becoming religious oppression.

Sarkozy is right.

Most banks will not allow people wearing ski masks.

Public schools do not allow hoodies or sunglasses indoors. Why is wearing a face-hiding outfit any different?
