The United States said Monday its invitations were still standing for Iranian diplomats to attend July 4 celebrations at US embassies despite the crackdown on opposition supporters.
President Barack Obama's administration said earlier this month it would invite Iran to US embassy barbecues for the national holiday for the first time since the two nations severed relations following the 1979 Islamic revolution.
"There's no thought to rescinding the invitations to Iranian diplomats," State Department spokesman Ian Kelly told reporters.
"We have made a strategic decision to engage on a number of fronts with Iran," Kelly said. "We tried many years of isolation, and we're pursuing a different path now."
But he said it was not clear if Iranian diplomats had accepted the invitations.

A good statesman doesn't make an invitation like this public unless he knows in advance that the invitation will be accepted.

Even for the Obama Administration this is insane. But the outcome is totally predictable: After experiencing a tide of scathing ridicule from the blogosphere and media pundits and Congress members, the State Department will back down and withdraw the invitation. Bank on it.

This will likely lead to demonstrations at U.S. embassies in Europe.
The Iranian demonstrators who are being killed are more Muslim than American too. Obama just likes thugs. They can be Muslim thugs or socialist thugs he doesn't care, he just likes leaders who torture and oppress their people.

Obama is sending ‘goodwill’ to a bunch of Islamist thugs killing their own citizens in the streets of Iran on a national holiday that celebrates freedom! It doesn’t get any worse than that! Every american should be outraged!
It make sense to me, if they come here the stupid suit can save the tax payers a lot of money.

Even the State Department would have the gumption to disinvite the Iranian diplomats.
While State is all about symbolism over substance, they know full well, that in diplo-speak, re-offering the invitation clearly constitutes tacit approval of the mullahs' current policy of violence.
