They call her Neda, which means 'voice' in Farsi, and her death has become the central rallying cry of the Iranian rebellion.
The pretty teenage girl killed by what appears to be a single sniper shot on the streets of Tehran Saturday is now a potent symbol for pro-democracy protesters battering the Islamic regime.
Her quick and brutal death in the arms of her howling father was captured on close-up video, posted to Facebook and sent to computer screens across the world.
"Neda you broke my heart, too young to die," was one of a flood of messages on Twitter.
"RIP Neda, the world cries seeing your last breath," read another. "Neda is everyone's sister, everyone's daughter, everyone's voice for freedom," said a third.
Iconic posters of her dead face, open-eyed and bloody, were carried by demonstrators in Los Angeles and New York City within hours.
The graphic video was originally posted to Facebook by an Iranian expatriate in Holland who said it was sent to him by a friend in Tehran, a doctor who tried to save the girl.
The expat said her name was Neda Soltani, a 16-year-old philosophy student.
The outpouring of messages on Twitter included a new account dedicated solely to insisting the video was fake. That poster was roundly shouted down as a tool of the Iranian regime.
If you watch the video of her being placed on the ground, they lay her in a pool of blood. Had she been shot with a gun, there wouldn’t be a pool, but a small to a large splatter of blood. That was a perfectly formed pool of blood. I am sorry, but it really seems staged to me.
The last still photo in comment# 58 looks convincing. I can see why the video is problematic.
The second video in the link in post 96 is what convinces me most that it’s real.
Towards the end, someone moves her body and the blood just gushes (pours) from her nose or eye (it’s hard to tell the source with the amount on her face) like it would if someone squeezed her body.
There’s no sign of her breathing, or trying to. No sign of bubbles coming through the blood if she were breathing. She’s perfectly motionless except for them trying to staunch the wound.
Her hands are still and limp in an odd sort of way, like I’d think they would be for someone who’s unconscious.
We’ve seen so many fake deaths on TV that I think that’s what may have some people confused as to what real death looks like, or should be expected.
BTW, I saw that glazed look in my father’s eyes when he died. It was the same.
I will say that, having seen the results of medium to high velocity rifle projectiles striking non-human targets in the upper chest, this is real. I am absolutely certain that the event shown in the video happened as the witnesses testify that it did. I have no medical credentials, but I understand elementary physics and how its laws apply to ammo. My prayers are with the people of Iran. May god bless them.
Although my dad wasn't killed, his eyes glazed over the same way when he died.
It's completely legitimate to question a video.
However, this one does not look fake. On other threads, Freepers with combat experience who have seen in person what happens to people who are shot as Neda was believe the video to be real.
But it really doesn't matter whether the video is real or fake, as long as it inspires the Iranian people to topple the regime. The election was a joke. Ahmadinejad or Moussavi? Who cares? It's the Guardian Council who decides who even gets to run, much less who gets to win. The government is illegitimate. No Iranian has any obligation to obey it or support it. The issue is not who won the election. It's whether the Guardian Council should live or die. I'm looking forward to a Ceausescu outcome, but I'll probably be disappointed.

If you are going to play this type of game then: I bet you believe there really was an alien autopsy at a military base.
