House Passes Bipartisan Resolution to Support Iranian Dissidents, 405 to 1

Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind.) and Rep. Howard Berman (D-Calif.) introduced the following resolution:

Expressing support for all Iranian citizens who embrace the values of freedom, human rights, civil liberties, and rule of law, and for other purposes.

Resolved, That the House of Representatives—

(1) expresses its support for all Iranian citizens who embrace the values of freedom, human rights, civil liberties, and rule of law;

(2) condemns the ongoing violence against demonstrators by the Government of Iran and pro-government militias, as well as the ongoing government suppression of independent electronic communication through interference with the Internet and cellphones; and

(3) affirms the universality of individual rights and the importance of democratic and fair elections.

The House just voted to pass it by an overwhelming margin 405 to 1. Ron Paul was the lone "no" vote, with two voting present and 25 not voting.

Why do you say so? Don’t you think these people should have to solve some of their own problems? Why do we have to do it all, all the time? Why would you get involved? To remove one dictator, and install, another? Would you send my son to die to remove this dictator, and install that one?? I sure as hell wouldn’t. Would you send your son to die to do it?

I’m tired of hearing all this bullshit about the “obama posistion”. That’s a lame ass excuse to avoid real debate on some of these ploicies, and people are starting to figure it out.

I got a boy coming up to that age now. That’s my new world affairs meter, not some garabage about taking obama’s posistion.

So, I’ll ask this again. Will you send your sons to die to install a dictator over a dictator? I won’t. I sure as hell won’t. Let their sons purchase their own freedom. Hell, we’ll probably have to do it ourselves here soon enough. Then, my son and I can stnd side by side, and do what needs done. But, I sure as hell don’t wantt him going over there to do what some Iranian son needs to do.

Excuse me.

I didn’t say we should invade Iran, I think that’s insane and I agree with the sheepish peoples of the world should follow our example of 1776 and do it themselves. But passing a mere congressional resolution (a statement) in support of the dissidents and of democracy (it’s not an endorsement of the “moderate” Presidential candidate that “lost”) seems good to me and I find Paul to be silly for voting against it.

And by the way parents don’t “send” their children to fight in wars. The children turn 18, join the military voluntarily with the knowledge that they are somewhat likely to face danger and get sent by the President or Congress whom they pledged to obey (I wouldn’t take that pledge).

I if had a kid I’d urge him to never work for the US Government, especially in a life-risking job like the military but that wouldn’t be my choice but his.

If I was the President I wouldn’t send my troops to Iran to aid a rebellion. This resolution doesn’t call for that and Obama would never do that anyway, this is merely a statement of support.

He’s always voted against such “statement” resolutions. I suppose he thinks that even commenting officially is too much government intervention in foreign affairs.
