3:10 is a good one, but read on. It talks about busybodies, and people who should earn their own bread.
11We hear that some among you are idle. They are not busy; they are busybodies. 12Such people we command and urge in the Lord Jesus Christ to settle down and earn the bread they eat.
I have no problem helping those in need when they are down and feel that is what we should do, as we can. But, in the same regard, we also the instruction given to the ancient Israelites at Leviticus 19:9 And when ye reap the harvest of your land, thou shalt not wholly reap the corners of thy field, neither shalt thou gather the gleanings of thy harvest. 10 And thou shalt not glean thy vineyard, neither shalt thou gather every grape of thy vineyard; thou shalt leave them for the poor and stranger: I am the LORD your God.
And again at Leviticus 23:22 And when ye reap the harvest of your land, thou shalt not make clean riddance of the corners of thy field when thou reapest, neither shalt thou gather any gleaning of thy harvest: thou shalt leave them unto the poor, and to the stranger: I am the LORD your God.
I see this as the abel bodied poor must make an effort at work in harvesting those crops themselves, not sitting back and waiting on them to be brought to them, as is done today.
