Senator questions firing of 3 inspectors general

WASHINGTON - -- He was appointed with fanfare as the public watchdog over the government's multi-billion dollar bailout of the nation's financial system. But now Neil Barofsky is embroiled in a dispute with the Obama administration that delayed one recent inquiry and sparked questions about his ability to freely investigate.

The disagreement stems from a claim by the Treasury Department that Barofsky is not entirely independent of the agency he is assigned to examine ¿ a claim that has prompted a stern letter from a Republican senator warning that agency officials are encroaching on the integrity of an office created to protect taxpayers.

Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, sent the letter Wednesday to Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner demanding information about a "dispute over certain Treasury documents" that he said were being "withheld" from Barofsky's office on a "specious claim of attorney-client privilege."

A White House spokesman declined to comment, referring questions to the Treasury Department. Treasury spokesman Andrew Williams said late Wednesday that the agency would read Grassley's letter and respond to the senator before any public comment.

I’m not so sure, Clinton fired all of them on taking office and Bush fired 7......the only issue that makes it significant with Walpin is the Johnson affair

Usually presidents replace these AG positions at a whim, first thing on taking office.
This is different because of the OBVIOUS motive involved ( which could not likely be proven )

That makes all the difference. This man was fired, because he discovered corruption involving one of the Liberal Messiah's friends. As for proof, have you ever heard of the legal term Res Ipsa Loquitor (It speaks for itself)? Unless another reason is proven, clearly this man was fired as part of a cover-up.

And, the impeachment bill itself would get some media coverage.

I agree impeachment needs to be called for on the merits - politics aside. However it is a matter of the best timing.

Are not the Attorneys general part of the judicial branch ?

the president could just fire any AG he wants and replace them with whoever he wants ( in order to get a Special prosecutor replaced)in order to avoid impeachment . (similar to what happened in the watergate case)

I'm sure no constitutional attorney, but it seems like firing AG's without congressional approval would violate the separation of powers

maybe that's what the White House lawyer meant when he said it was a courageous act to remove Walpin

They were Inspectors General not AGs - but I believe your point is valid nonetheless.

I am desperately hoping that Walpin sues ‘The One’ over his firing

At the rate Obama is going this could become a class action suit.

Call Dem Senators from Co, Mt,ND,SD,AR,and LA and let them know that their Power is being Usurped. With this and Czars, they are diluting the Legislative branch. They think it is party unity, but look how the executive treats them. Every time they vote with the president they loose power.

Think about it.
